Valpo Mortar Board Chapter Receives National Recognition

The Gown and Gavel chapter of Mortar Board at Valparaiso University received national recognition at the Mortar Board National College Senior Honor Society Conference held recently in Indianapolis.

Mortar Board National College Senior Honor Society recognizes college seniors for outstanding achievement in scholarship, leadership and service. Receiving a 2016 Silver Torch award distinguishes Valpo’s chapter for its significant accomplishments in these areas and for its meaningful service to Valparaiso University.

The Gown and Gavel chapter is active on campus, conducting several events each year to promote leadership and service. In spring 2016, the group organized the “President for a Day” event, in which a junior engineering major traded places with University President Mark A. Heckler. The student attended a variety of meetings across campus, while President Heckler attended her classes. Valpo’s Mortar Board intends to hold this event again in November.

The goal of Mortar Board is to provide opportunities for continued leadership development, promote service to institutions of higher learning and encourage lifelong contributions to the global community. The Valpo chapter serves both campus and the greater Valparaiso community by promoting these ideals.
