Valparaiso University to Host Veterans Day Events

WHAT: Valparaiso University will host several events on campus to commemorate Veterans Day.

The Valpo Military and Veterans Programs will partner with Porter Starke and Pines Village Retirement Community to present “Transforming Our Communities to Heal Our Veterans,” a free community event open to veterans, veteran families, students, staff, administrators, community leaders and politicians. Edward Tick, Ph.D., will speak on the effects of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) on veterans, veteran families and the community. Tick co-founded and is the executive director of Soldier’s Heart, a program dedicated to helping veterans after they return from service. As a psychotherapist, he has worked with veterans since the 1970s to aid in their healing process and treat PTSD.

Following Tick’s presentation, he will hold a “One-on-One Focus Group” with student veterans from both the Valparaiso community and other local institutions.

ROTC and the Valpo Military and Veterans Services office will host their annual “Campus Veterans Day Event” with Distinguished Visiting Professor and retired USAF Colonel Tom Cedel as the event’s speaker. Chaplain and retired Army CW4 David McKee will offer the invocation and benediction for the event.

The Military Veterans Law Association will host their sixth annual “Veterans 5K Fun Run” to raise money for “Help a Vet Get a Pet,” which covers fees for veterans to adopt rescue animals.
