New geoscience major offers opportunities in growing field

Fri, January 20, 2006 |

A new bachelor’s degree program in geoscience developed by Valparaiso University will equip students for careers in natural disaster preparation and other fields where an understanding of geography and meteorology are necessary.

In the wake of natural disasters such as Hurricane Katrina and the Indian Ocean tsunami, Dr. Jon Kilpinen, chair of Valpo’s Department of Geography and Meteorology, says there’s a tremendous need for students who can integrate knowledge of mapping technology, weather patterns and natural hazards.

“With recent events, more people are realizing how geography and meteorology are connected,” Dr. Kilpinen said. “The events surrounding Hurricane Katrina demonstrate how a weather-related disaster can have huge geographic impacts, both physical and social.”

Students will be able to earn either a major or a minor in geoscience through VU’s Department of Geography and Meteorology.

Students will take classes in physical geography, meteorology and the use of advanced mapping technology. Students also will complete a professional experience in geoscience.

The program will benefit students interested in rapidly growing fields such as emergency management, environmental management and natural disaster preparation and recovery.

“It makes sense to offer a program in an area that has a growing number of job opportunities and a need for talented graduates who understand the dynamic interaction between the atmosphere and the Earth’s surface,” Dr. Kilpinen said.
