Professor Alverson teaches in the undergraduate and graduate programs. She is a certified nurse educator and received the 2001-2002 Caterpillar Award for Excellence in Teacher. She is certified as a family nurse practitioner (FNP) by the American Nurses Credentialing Center and practices as an FNP at the University Student Health Center. In addition to her practice, she is involved with nursing research and has engaged undergraduate nursing students in the research process. Undergraduate students have presented their work at local, regional, and international conferences as a result of her mentoring. Professor Alverson has published articles in the American Journal for Nurse Practitioners, AORN Journal, Holistic Nursing Practice, Journal of Nursing Education, Journal of Professional Nursing, Nurse Educator, NLN: Nursing Education Perspectives, Nursing Leadership Forum, Nursing Connections, Journal of Community Health Nursing, and Research and Theory for Nursing Practice.
