Grantseeking Workshop Series

The workshop series for VU faculty and staff is sponsored by the Lumina Center, the Office of Institutional Advancement, the Christopher Center for Library and Information Resources, and the Teaching Resource Center. Presenters include Sandy McMullen, Lumina Center Director; Kathy Groth, Corporations and Foundations Coordinator; and Rick AmRhein, Dean of Library Services. Other topic-specific presenters and guest speakers will also be featured in the series.

Advance registration is required for all workshops and attendance is limited to VU faculty and staff. Seating is limited and reservations will be accepted on a first come, first serve basis. Contact Sandy McMullen directly at ext. 5494 or send an e-mail to her.

All workshops will be held from 8:00 - 9:30a.m. in Christopher Center Room 261B.

November 15, 2007: “Seeking Support from Corporations and Foundations ”

October 18, 2007: “Finding Statistical Information”

Presenter: Becky Byrum, Government Information Services Librarian, Christopher Center

October '07: Christopher Center Government Information: Statistics Sources

The hands-on workshop will focus on finding census data from American FactFinder. Participants will explore American Community Survey and other U.S. Census products, as well as learn how to compile detailed tables and make geographic comparisons. Other statistical tools from federal, state, and international sources will be demonstrated.

This workshop is designed specifically for new faculty and staff or individuals on campus who are new to the grantseeking process. In recent years, grantseeking has become very competitive, and at the same time, VU faculty and staff have become increasingly active in seeking external financial support for both individual research projects and campus-wide initiatives. Please plan to attend this workshop if you are interested in submitting proposals to foundations, corporations, or governmental agencies for funding.

Topics to be covered include:

• New faculty perpsectives and approaches
• Roles of the Lumina Center and OIA in the grantseeking process
• Grantseeking procedures, forms and resources
• Foundation Center Online Directory, with time used to explore this online resource available only in the Christopher Center.

The workshop focused on budget preparation and is beneficial for faculty and staff who will be preparing program budgets or who just want to learn more about the basics of budgeting. Sample budgets will be provided for in-class discussion and exercises. Topics covered included:
