MISSION
To educate, enlighten, engage, and empower students/participants to become socially responsible, pro-active and involved leaders who are dedicated and committed to improving human relations and human conditions through service, faith, and vocation.
HISTORY
The Peace and Social Justice Symposium was developed in 2002 by a core group of VU students and two faculty/staff members who sought to provide a venue for discussion and dialogue of social and political issues that affect human relations and human conditions. In addition, the goal was to promote civic responsibility, activism and to encourage collaborative endeavors to affect positive, social change.
The first Symposium was funded by a grant through the Peace, Justice & Integrity Program. In subsequent years, sponsorship has come from numerous Academic and Student Affair departments. The Cultural Arts Committee has also continued to provide annual, generous funding to support the annual Symposium.
The Peace & Social Justice Symposium is administered through VU’s Office of Multicultural Programs under the leadership of Co-Chairs, Jane Bello-Brunson (Director of Multicultural Programs/Adjunct Instructor of Valpo CORE) and Del Gillispie (Assistant Professor of Biology and Education Departments). Committee members consist of faculty and staff from various departments and student leaders representing numerous campus organizations. The planning of this Symposium is truly a collaborative ‘Labor of Love!’
