Forthcoming Visit

• February 8 - 9, 2007:

  Thomas G. Rawski professor of economics and history and Research Professor in the University Center for International Studies, University of Pittsburgh.

  Professor Rawski has been a visiting research scholar at the University of Tokyo, Harvard's Fairbank Center for East Asian Research, the Hoover Institution, and the Australian National University. Past president of the Association for Comparative Economic Studies, he has received grants and fellowships from the National Science Foundation, the ACLS, the Wilson Center, and the Guggenheim Foundation.

  His research focuses on the development and modern history of China's economy; including studies of China's reform mechanism and achievements, as well as specific analyses of productivity, investment, industry, trade, labor markets, and economic measurement. He is co-organizer of a large collaborative project aimed at evaluating China's recent growth spurt from the perspective of global economic history. His publications include Economic Growth and Employment in China; Chinese History in Economic Perspective; Economic Growth in Prewar China; China's Transition to Industrialization; and Economics and the Historian.

  Thomas Childers, Sheldon and Lucy Hackney Professor of History at the University of Pennsylvania. Professor Childers specializes in German history, especially the World War II era. He has won several teaching awards.
