Family Weekend Registration

Start off your Family Weekend experience by picking up your official name tag, which serves as your ticket to all of your registered events, as well as additional information about the weekend. Any changes or updates to the weekend schedule will be posted.

Brauer Museum of Art

Center for the Arts
“Newel Posts from the Jay W. Christopher Collection”, “Rock ’n Roll Photographs by Henry Diltz”, and “Works from the Brauer Museum of Art’s Permanent Collection” will be on display. Admission is free, donations welcome.

Chapel of the Resurrection
The Chapel will be open throughout much of the weekend; feel free to come inside and take in the beauty of this remarkable structure. Guided group tours will take place on Saturday at 10 and 11 a.m. (please register on the attached form). On Saturday afternoon, staff members will be available by appointment if you would like a personal tour. Call the Chapel office at 219-464-5093.

2011 Alumni Association Christmas Ornament
The 2011 Valparaiso University Alumni Association ornament will feature Heritage Hall. Purchase yours for $15 at registration. Ornaments from some previous years also will be available for $10.

Chapel of the Resurrection
Student performers and members of the community are conducted by Jeffrey Scott Doebler ’87 Mus.M., associate professor of music. Admission is free.

8:30 – 9:30 p.m.
Astronomical Observatory Open House
Located behind Meier Hall and Gellersen Center
Hosted by Bruce Hrivnak, professor of physics and astronomy. In the event of cloudy or inclement weather, an indoor planetarium show will be featured in Neils Science Center, Room 224. Call 219-464-5202 or visit physics.valpo.edu/ astronomy/obsOpenHouse.html after 5 p.m. that evening to ensure that the observatory is open.

SARA Telescope Remote Viewing Demonstration
Neils Science Center, Room 234
Valpo is a member of the Southeastern Association for Research in Astronomy (SARA), a consortium of 10 universities that operates a 36-inch telescope at Kitt Peak National Observatoryin Arizona. Todd Hillwig, assistant professor of physics and astronomy, will demonstrate the process of operating the telescope live from 1,500 miles away. Real-time images taken with the telescope will be displayed.

Valpo’s famous Belgian waffles are usually served only on Sunday mornings, but will be offered on Saturday especially for you. Waffles are $3.75 each, with toppings available for an additional $1.25 each. Meal cards accepted – don’t missthe chance for your student to treat the family! Registration recommended onattached form.

The undergraduate admission staffwill be available to answer high schoolstudents’ questions about applying andenrolling at Valpo. Sixty-minute campustours for prospective students will beavailable at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. on afirst come-first served basis; studentsmust sign up at the booth between 8a.m. and 9:30 a.m., as tour spots arelimited. Tours will depart from the westdoors of the Harre Union.

Take a bus ride through Valparaiso and discover the options your student has for shopping, dining, recreation and more. Regrettably, the bus is not handicap accessible. Space is limited, so please register early.

Study Abroad With Valpo

Valpo offers its students a multitude of study-abroad opportunities during their four years on campus. Listen as Julie Maddox ’04, ’05 MS, director of study-abroad programs and international programs, tells you about these options. Learn about the different programs and how students can work study abroad semesters into their time at Valpo.

Food and beverages will be available for purchase and will be located in the tent between the Athletics-Recreation Center and University Fitness Center.(Rain location is inside the ARC.) Enjoy music by WVUR, and a visitby the Valpo Crusader, along with the Crusaderettes, cheerleaders and pepband. The Student Alumni Associationwill take your photo with the Crusader, will hand out brown and gold shakers, and will help you display your Valpo spirit with a temporary tattoo or faceart. Meal cards accepted. Please register on the attached form.

Donald V. Fites Engineering Innovation Center Dedication Ceremony
Fites Center (south of Gellersen Center)
Families and students are invited to join the campus community in celebration of Valpo’s first green building accordingto LEED standards. Made up primarily of laboratory and learning space for undergraduate engineering students,the project also includes a renovation of about 4,300 square feet of existing laboratory space. The building is named for civil engineering graduate Donald V.Fites ’56, retired chief executive officer and chairman of Caterpillar Inc. and a member of the Valparaiso University Board of Directors.

The Virtual Nursing Learning Centerwill be featured, with students demonstrating the SimBaby, SimMan,and other functions of simulation technology in nursing education.

Communication students will give demonstrations on how video is digitally edited.

Families are invited to see the center. Flu vaccinations will be available for students for $20 each.

Choral Concert

Valparaiso University’s Chorale, Men’s Choir, and Women’s Choir will performunder the direction of guest conductorStephan Schuck. Admission is $15 foradults, $10 for senior citizens 62 and older and non-Valpo students, and free for children under 12 and Valpo students, faculty and staff. Tickets maybe purchased on the attached form or at the door.

Music provided by Valparaiso University student musicians. Guest speaker will be Beth Scaglione-Sewell, associate professor of biology and recipient of the 2011 Valparaiso University Alumni Association Distinguished Teaching Award. Registration required on attached form. $15 per person. A kid’s meal is available for children 12 and under for $8. Limited space available. Please noteon your registration form if your student is performing in the evening concert.
