Parents Council

Valparaiso University Parents Council members serve as ambassadors on behalf of VU, promoting and supporting Valpo to external audiences. More importantly, council members act as liaisons between all parents of Valpo students, the students themselves, and the university.

What We Do and Where to Find Us

Welcome Weekend

Every fall, mom, dad and student pack up part of the house and move it to Valpo. Parents Council members are on campus to help with refreshments, directions, information, or just a seat and a tissue - the Parents Council Welcome Center provides useful information and a place to rest.

Council members also host a Parents Panel, where parents have the opportunity to ask questions and get answers based on the experiences of Parents Council members.

Family Weekend

Every fall Parents Council members host a weekend in which VU parents can visit their children on campus. The weekend offers athletic, cultural and informational activities for the entire family. For many parents, this is the first opportunity to see their student since the semester began. Come learn what your student is up to.

Valpo FOCUS Sessions

Members are on hand at a Parents Council-sponsored booth to answer questions and help incoming students and their parents see firsthand what Valpo student life is all about. At FOCUS, parents get to attend class, live in a residence hall and eat delicious cafeteria food. This is one of the few opportunities they will have to immerse themselves in the college experience.

Meetings

The Council gathers on campus twice a year, once in the fall and once in the spring, to plan the year's activities. We also meet with faculty, staff and the administration to receive state-of-the-campus updates.

Communication

Chances are that you have already heard from us in one way or another. The Parents Council works with the admission office to publish the "Valpo Parent" for incoming parents three times a year, we write a quarterly electronic newsletter for all current parents, and we keep our Web site up to date so you have access to all the information you need. Write us at parents@valpo.edu to share your Valpo story, to update your contact information, or to ask us a question.

Parents Newsletters

"We wanted a college experience for our son that provided a quality education, encouraged him to think critically about the world around him, and offered opportunities to explore the person he is becoming. With one semester down, he is thriving. We've watched him make great friends, test his ideas, grow in his personal faith, and excel in his course work. What more could parents want?"
