
The science of exercise physiology may be defined as the study of the responses of the body to exercise. It has a long academic history that has been founded in the discipline of Physical Education. From its American origin in 1927 at the Harvard Fatigue Laboratory, today's exercise science has continually expanded its horizons to incorporate knowledge from a wide range of academic disciplines. disciplines including, but not limited to, anatomy, physiology, cellular and molecular biology, endocrinology, chemistry, biochemistry, and of course, physical education. Exercise science can be studied at various levels from the whole body to molecular structure, and may focus on the acute responses to exercise and chronic adaptations to physical activity.
The beneficial aspects of exercise have been medically recognized and accepted for their role in both the preventive and rehabilitative aspects of health. It is the goal of our exercise science program to provide Valparaiso University students an opportunity to study exercise science ina disciplined approach that would encompass the many aspects of exercise.
The Physical Education Teacher Education concentration is designed to offer students a comprehensive background in theoretical and practical aspects of physical education. Graduates of the physical education: teacher education program are prepared to serve as teachers of physical education and health, as coaches, and in other recreational fields, as well as continue their education in graduate school.
Although physical education in the school setting is a continuing area of professional opportunity, personal physical activity and enjoyment of spectator sports have created new areas of opportunity for the physical educator.
The Sports Management undergraduate program is designed for students who desire a career in the business of sports. At Valparaiso University, this program provides students with a diversified background within the area of study. Students receive the necessary skills and competencies to seek employment within the various sports management areas, a sound education core for furthering his/her graduate study, a liberal arts business minor, and a Bachelor of Science in Phyiscal Eduation: Sports Management degree. Students are exposed to a curriculum that includes extensive opportunities for the practical application of theoretical principles.
The Master of Science in Sports Administration (MSSA) is a 34 or 35 credit
program for men and women interested in pursuing careers in the management
of sports personnel and facilities. The program capitalizes, builds upon
and interfaces with the University's NCAA Division I status. Graduates of
this program may assume supervisory and administrative position in a variety
of settings, including public recreation systems, voluntary agencies, facility
and event management, community based athletic programs, and professional
sports organizations.
