First Year Summer Research Internship Award

  • Guaranteed summer research position with physics/astronomy faculty member after your first year.
  • Get trained up on one of our faculty member’s research area and make a meaningful contribution. You’ll learn some science, some analysis methods, and find out a bit of what “doing science” is like. It’s great to put on your resume, too!
  • Stipend: around $550/week for 6 – 10 weeks.
  • On-campus housing: often this is provided free of charge, but need to apply for that separately in the spring before the position stars.
  • The award is contingent upon satisfactory progress in the freshman year toward a physics or astronomy degree.

To Apply

  • If you would like to apply for the summer internship, please click here and fill out the form.

Note: if you apply and do not get awarded this internship, please know that you are still definitely welcome and strongly encouraged to go through the normal application process if you are interested in working with us in the summer. We want to mentor you and get you this invaluable and enriching experience. Over their 4 years with us at Valpo, historically 80 – 90% of our majors have gotten at least one summer research position.
