Homecoming Colloquium: The Physics of Medical Imaging

Ron Kneusel ('88), ITT Visual Information Solutions

Medical imaging is a large and important field.  It encompasses all types of medical images from histology slides to MRI scanners.  While it is not possible to do justice to this broad topic in a single presentation we will discuss two of the most common imaging modalities: magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography.  In terms of interesting physics, magnetic resonance imaging is the king of medical imaging, so emphasis will be on developing an understanding at the conceptual level of how MR images are formed.
