Research Positions in Atmospheric Science

GENERAL DESCRIPTION & LOCATION:  Funding may be available to support students on air quality projects at the University of Houston (Texas).  Student researchers are responsible for preparing, calibrating, testing, assembling, and launching ozonesondes, as well as posting, distributing, and analyzing the data.  Modeling and data analysis projects using balloon and satellite data are possible.  Science questions to be addressed include: 1) partitioning of ozone pollution between local and remote sources and stratospheric origins; 2) the impact of Hurricane Ike on air quality; 3) the thermodynamic mechanism responsible for a balloon in Panama oscillating between 2.5 and 5.1 km five times; 4) the need for regular radiosonde observations in Houston; and many others.

REQUIREMENTS:  Previous lab work, familiarity with standard software packages plus Dreamweaver, Adobe Acrobat, and IDL are desirable but not required. An interest in atmospheric science would be helpful. Training will be provided. Availability and willingness to spend your summer in Texas is essential.

STIPEND:  Salary will be commensurate with experience and VU policy.  Housing and travel expenses will be covered.
