Bio-Nano-Physics Student Research

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:  There may be an opportunity this summer (2010) for one student to work as a research assistant with Prof. Richter and his collaborator Prof. Pinkhassik (Memphis).  This highly interdisciplinary research project involves studying nanomaterials. The exact program of research has yet to be determined, but would likely involve chemistry, computer modeling and fitting, and data collection at national labs.

LOCATION:  It is likely that the student would be working at the University of Memphis, though one or two research trips to the Advanced Photon Source and Oak Ridge National Lab may occur.

REQUIREMENTS:  Training on how to perform the chemical work and perform the data fitting will be given. College-level courses in introductory chemistry are strongly desired since the assistant will be expected to work with chemicals. Some familiarity with computer programming and data analysis is also a plus, but is not required.  The assistant will be assigned readings in the area of x-ray studies, neutron studies, and biomaterials, and will be expected to prepare a formal written research progress report by the end of the summer. A presentation during the following fall at a physics colloquium will also be required.

The student will be expected to apply for a Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) position at the University of Memphis to work with Prof. Pinkhassik's laboratory. Prof. Richter will help guide the application process.

DATES & STIPEND:  The summer appointment will be for up to 10 weeks depending on the source of funding, with an anticipated starting date of the last week of May or first week of June.  Slightly different starting dates or work periods may be possible.  Depending on the source of funding, the salary will be around $390 per week. Housing will be provided. Travel expenses and a per diem will be provided for off-campus trips.

APPLICATION & DEADLINE: Print out and fill out the application.

Interested applicants are encouraged to turn in a completed application as soon as possible.  The deadline is February 24, 2010.  Evaluation of the applications will take place during the following few weeks, and applicants will be notified by early April.  Please see Prof. Richter or contact him electronically (Andrew.Richter@valpo.edu) if you have questions about the position.
