International Relations Major

United Nations

Students selecting the International Relations major take the following four courses that are required for all students in the department.

  • POLS 120 The Government of the United States
  • POLS 130 Comparative Politics
  • POLS 240 Political Theory
  • POLS 493 Senior Seminar in Political Science
In addition, students take POLS 230 International Relations

Students then select courses from the following options.

International Relations Courses (9 credits).
Take at least 3 of the following courses:

  • POLS 310 American Foreign Policy
  • POLS 311 Model United Nations
  • POLS 312 Principles of Peace and Social Justice
  • POLS 313 Study Abroad Field Research
  • POLS 380 Problems in International Relations
  • POLS 409 International Political Economy
  • POLS 410 International Regimes and Global Governance
  • POLS 411 War and Conflict
  • POLS 386 Internship in Political Science (when appropriate)

Comparative and Area Studies Courses (6 credits).
Take at least two of the following courses and at least one focusing on a specific geographic area:

  • POLS 330 Politics of Industrialized States
  • POLS 331 Politics of Developing States
  • POLS 332 Politics of China and East Asia
  • POLS 333 Politics of Africa
  • POLS 334 Politics of the Middle East
  • POLS 336 Politics of Latin America
  • POLS 400 Comparative Public Policy
  • POLS 401  Gender and Public Policy in Global Perspective
  • POLS 386 Internship in Political Science (when appropriate)
