Halloween Edition
October 19, 2004
Greetings! This edition of PsychNews contains
announcements about two extremely important events - Career & Grad School
Info Night & Psych Majors Pre-Registration Sessions. Plan to attend
both of these sessions!
~ Career & Grad School Info Night ~
Monday, October 25, 5:00 p.m.
Mueller Hall 114
Mark your calendars for this valuable information session this Monday to
help in planning for life after VU. This session is NOT-for-seniors-only!
Good planning for a career or grad school begins your freshman year,
so all psych majors should attend. Highlights include:
~ Free Food!! We will provide some seasonal
snacks to treat you before Halloween! ~
~ Sandy McGuigan, Career Center - Planning
your Career ~
~ Freshman/Sophmores - How to prepare for
Grad School ~
~ Junior/Seniors - Jobs for the BA/BS; How
to apply to Grad School ~
This will be time well-spent in learning about psychology outside the classroom
and positioning yourself well for a career or grad school.
~ATTENTION!! PSY MAJORS PRE-REGISTRATION~
Pre-registration is here once again! For the newbies among you, the Psychology
Department conducts a "pre-registration" session prior to the
beginning of the University normal registration period (November 1). This
is because in the past, psych classes have frequently closed before our
majors got a chance to register. Thus, we hold a session in which we will
sign you into your psych courses, guaranteeing that you will get into your
desired psych courses no matter what date you are assigned to formally register
(i.e., when you log in to DataVU, you will see that you are already registered
for your psych courses).
Thus, this pre-registration is very important if you want to get into
the Psychology classes that you need. The following are the times for each
class:
~ TUESDAY, OCT. 26: SENIORS 6:00 - 6:30 PM; JUNIORS 6:30
- 7:00 PM ~
~ WEDNESDAY, OCT. 27: SOPHOMORES 6:00 - 6:30 PM; FRESHMEN
6:30 - 7:00 PM ~
~ ALL SESSIONS WILL BE HELD IN APB (Art-Psychology Building)
34 ~
If you want to get into your psych classes in the Spring, it is VITAL that
you come to your assigned session. If for a valid reason you cannot be there,
you must contact your adviser BEFORE the session. This is the only way that
we will be able to get you into your classes. For example, if a senior skips
the session and does not talk to his/her adviser until after the juniors'
session and a lab class is closed, we will not be able to sign him/her in.
If you talk to your advisor before the session, we will register you AFTER
the seniors who come to the session, but BEFORE the juniors.
The psychology faculty will provide advice about courses to take and will
answer questions about scheduling. If you do not contact your adviser and/or
do not attend your assigned pre-reg session, you will have to stand in line
behind everyone else to try to get into your desired psych classes.
Prior to coming to your assigned session, you should have studied the Schedule
of Classes and have a tentative list of courses you want to take (you should
also have a list of alternative courses in case any on your original list
are closed). You should realize that group advising/pre-registration should
not substitute for meetings with your academic adviser to discuss plans,
options, etc. You are always encouraged to engage your advisor in discussions
of this type at any time. You should contact your adviser at once if you
want to meet with him/her prior to the pre-registration sessions.
~SUMMER SESSIONS INFORMATION~
As you are planning your Spring schedule, be aware that the department
offers several psych courses during summer terms. This can be helpful if
you get closed out of a course you wanted in the spring, need to re-take
a course, or just want to get ahead in some of your psych requirements.
Two of these courses this summer will be offered online, so you don't even
have to be on campus to take them. Here is the list of courses currently
planned for summer sessions:
Summer Session I
(1) PSY-125-OL Social Psychology (Online)
(2) PSY-202-OL Research Methods (Online)
(3) PSY-390 Advanced Statistics & Methodology
(4) PSY-495 Independent Research in Psychology (Instructor & Chair approval
required)
(5) PSY-496 Independent Study in Psychology (Instructor & Chair approval
required)
Summer Session II

(2) PSY-485 Psychology Practicum; Field Experience (Instructor approval
required)
(3) PSY-495 Independent Research in Psychology (Instructor & Chair approval

I hope your semester continues to go well for you. See you at Career/Grad
Nite & PsychPreReg!
Sincerely,
Dan Arkkelin
