Biography

David Rowland came to Valparaiso University in 1981. Over the years, he has held research fellowships at SUNY-Stony Brook in Psychiatry, Stanford University in Physiology, Johns Hopkins School of Public Health, and Erasmus University Netherlands in Endocrinology. Professor Rowland’s expertise lies in the areas of behavioral neuroscience and human sexuality, with a research focus on human sexual response, dysfunction, and identity. He has 200+ research publications and book chapters, and has authored or edited five books, including The Handbook for Sexual and Gender Identity Disorders (Wiley Press, 2008), Sexual Dysfunction in Men (Hogrefe, 2011), and Cultural Differences and the Practice of Sexual Medicine (Springer Science, 2020). He has served as editor-in-chief of the Annual Review of Sex Research, on the editorial boards of numerous major journals, and on the advisory boards of both professional societies and international pharmaceutical companies. He is co-founder and co-editor of the Journal of Mind and Medical Sciences.

As former dean of the Graduate School and Associate Provost until 2014, Professor Rowland oversaw phenomenal growth in graduate enrollment; nurtured the development of many new programs; increased selectivity in admissions; broadened the graduate student base to include much of the Midwest, the Great Lakes region, and the East Coast; and cultivated graduate school partnerships with universities in China, India, Nigeria, Pakistan, and other countries. In 2015-16, he served as the executive director for the Office of Institutional Innovation. He has since returned to the Department of Psychology, where he serves as Senior Research Professor in Psychology.

During his free time, Professor Rowland enjoys bicycling, reading and living history, camping, international travel, and an occasional tall glass of microbrew.
