Jennifer Prough, Ph.D.

Jeni Prough, Ph.D., associate professor of humanities and East Asian studies and author of “Straight from the Heart” (2011), focuses her research on Japanese media and tourism, looking specifically at the history and creation of Japanese girls’ comics (manga). Her current research examines historical tourism in Kyoto, Japan’s ancient capital, and she recently studied tourist sites that commemorate the Meiji restoration hero Sakamoto Ryouma.

Among her many works and appearances, Professor Prough recently organized a panel titled, “Renovating History: Old stories, new uses” at the Association for Asian Studies Meeting in Chicago. In addition, she was recently invited to speak at a symposium at Ohio State University titled “Manga at a Crossroads 2015: Development and Globalization of Manga,” where she presented her paper, “Local Text, Global Audiences: a view from within the shōjo manga industry.”
