Resident Assistant Selection: Academic Year 2016-2017

Thank for your interest in the Resident Assistant (RA) position!

Valparaiso University firmly believes that living in a residence hall provides students with a learning experience that integrates and complements the more formal educational activities of the classroom, laboratory, studio and stage. The role of the Resident Assistant is to help create and facilitate an environment of student learning in the residence halls, through planned and intentional educational outreach programs, as well as through informal activities. As a campus leader and role model, the Resident Assistant position provides an opportunity to observe and correct undesirable behavior while teaching new skills in problem solving, decision making, and critical thinking; to assist students in taking responsibility for their actions; to orient students to college life and aid in their emotional and academic adjustment; and to help students develop individual social skills.

We're looking for students who meet the following requirements:

  • Full-time student enrollment status with a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA and a 2.0 semester GPA throughout employment.
  • Maintained good social and academic standing with the University.
  • Resided in a Residence Hall at least two full semesters prior to the start of employment as a RA.
  • Students from all different backgrounds, interests, and majors.

Application

The online application can be found in your DataVU>Housing Self Service>RA Job Application (Spring 2016). The application consists of three core portions: Resident Assistant Position Description Review, General Information, and Scenario Based Discussion Questions.

Available Applications:

  • New Resident Assistant
  • Returning Resident Assistant
  • Assistant Coordinator (must be a current Valparaiso University Resident Assistant or Assistant Coordinator)

Please be prepared to complete each section in its entirety, as you will not be able to return and complete work later.

Compensation

A private room will be provided with a 100% discount off the current double room rate for the building to which you have been assigned, as space permits.  This room will be provided during the length of your employment.  You are required to complete a Housing Agreement form and are subject to all conditions outlined in the agreement regardless of your employment status.

A stipend will be paid in the amount of $1200 per semester (semesters 1-2), $1400 per semester (semesters 2-3), or $1600 for any subsequent semesters of employment and $2800 per semester for Assistant Coordinators, unless otherwise noted in your appointment letter.  This stipend is subject to review each semester in accordance with the merit salary guidelines as printed in the current Resident Assistant Manual, and final approval of the Assistant Dean of Students.
