Environmental Health and Safety
Policy Development Process and Enforcement
Valparaiso University strives to protect its employees, students, and visitors from being
injured while on campus. Proper development and enforcement of Environmental Health
and Safety Policy that governs each department is necessary in order to achieve this goal.
The University Safety Manager is the University’s environmental health and safety
officer. As such, the Manager leads the efforts to develop and enforce Environmental
Health and Safety Policy on campus. In addition, the University Environmental Health
and Safety Committee, consisting of representatives from diverse operational
departments of the University, is charged to aid in the review and development of
environmental health and safety-related programs. Together, the Manager and
Committee, in consultation with department leaders, develop University Environmental
Health and Safety Policy. Such policy shall govern the University upon the approval of
the University President, Provost, or the Vice President for Administration and Finance.
Department leaders are responsible for implementing Environmental Health and Safety
Policy once approved. The Manager will monitor over each department for
environmental health and safety issues and policy enforcement. Any dispute between the
Manager and a department leader concerning an environmental health and safety issue
will be directed to the University Counsel for a final resolution.
