Emergency Management

Valparaiso University continues to work on initiatives to ensure a reliable response and safety and survivability in the event of Natural or man-made disaster. The Campus Emergency Management uses the all - hazards aproach using the NFPA 1700 structure and followes the National Incudent Management System. 

Incident Command Team is made up of two parts 1) The Executive Emergency Group 2) Incident Command Team

The Executive Emergency Group consist of the President, the Provost, and the VP of Finance. However, to implement a unified command approach during an emergency, the Incident Command Team has also be identified. Incident Commanders, by definition, are those people who will have the responsibility and the authority to make emergency decisions using an all-hazards approach. 

Each person commits to the following: 

A. National Incident Management System - NIMS Training http://training.fema.gov/IS/NIMS.asp1. NIMS 100, 200, 700, 800 (available on line)  

B. Meeting each month to train, review VU and/or other national incidents, update documents, support a campus-wide mental health profile review, identify emergency training needs and drills for the general campus, and establish and help maintain a CERT team.

C. The IC team will consist of the following 9 people plus an administrative recorder. Each IC will need to identify at least a first and second back- up person. These people will need to be NIMS-trained also, and remain up to date on the IC team activities.
