It’s been one year since I graduated from the VU Social Work Department, and within that time my life has changed. I finished my first year of graduate school at Indiana University Northwest and will graduate in May 2010 with a concentration in health. During the spring, I interned at North Shore Health Centers in Portage with a behavioral health consultant, Jennifer Noonan. She has worked for South Lake Mental Health for 14 years and is an outstanding social worker! I couldn’t have asked for a better supervisor and a more rewarding experience!
Get excited…because I’ve got BIGGER news to report!! In Spring 2010, I will be interning at Riley Children’s Hospital and finishing up graduate school at IUPUI! I applied for a fellowship to work with children with special health care needs and was accepted! Seven MSW students from the IU School of Social Work applied, and two were chosen. On June 22nd, I will receive a $2,500 stipend from the founder of the fellowship, Jason Baker. He was a former football player for the Indianapolis Colts, and now he plays for the North Carolina Panthers. When Jason’s sister fell ill, he took her to Riley Children’s Hospital. After countless doctor visits, she finally received the quality healthcare she deserved. The social worker at Riley’s was very accommodating, and it influenced him to contribute to the IU School of Social Work. The contribution will sponsor a new pilot program at Riley’s for children with special health care needs. The moment I received an email confirming this opportunity I was speechless!!! From the bottom of my heart, thank you for all of your encouragement! I couldn’t have made it to graduate school without you!
