Students donate meal money to benefit food pantry

Valpo students load up food to deliver to the local Hilltop Food Pantry.

Valparaiso University students showed their generosity this holiday season by donating extra meal card money to support those in need.

That money is used by Dining Services to purchase food that is donated to the local Hilltop Food Pantry. The effort is sponsored by Valparaiso University’s Social Action Leadership Team, which raised $14,000 last year through this endeavor.

“It’s a really simple process,” said Mary Zastrow, SALT chair. “All you have to do is you go to your dining hall register and say that you’d like to donate whatever amount you have left on your meal card after the semester.”

This story caps off Valpo’s 24 Days of Christmas, a website that was updated daily throughout the month of December. Visit valpo.edu/valpochristmas for videos, photos and music, a unique post for each of 24 days. This content includes features on the Christmas Concert, the Valpo-Purdue men’s basketball game, Advent-Christmas Vespers, and a Christmas message from President Heckler. The season started with a bang, thanks to a tree-lighting event that included fireworks.

Thanks to all of those who contributed to a fun and meaningful Christmas season for the entire Valparaiso University community.
