When law student Justin Vining came to campus three years ago, he never imagined being in the position he is in today, nearing graduation with plans for a dual career in law and art. Wheatfields at Twilight My Starry Night “At the end of the first semester of law school, I needed a break from the books and to tap into my creative side, so I began to paint,” said Vining. Vining hopes to open the law firm "Vining and Vining" with his brother near their hometown of Etna Green, Ind., after graduation this year, while also pursuing the creation and sales of his artwork. Vining was attracted to the Valparaiso University School of Law after hearing about the experience of his younger brother Nathan (meteorology, ’07) as an undergraduate student here.
“He had nothing but great things to say,” said Vining. “He sold me on the school and we both applied to law school, and were accepted.”
From there, the budding artist says he found more than just a great law education. Vining’s interest in art began in high school, and he taught art at an elementary school in suburban Indianapolis for three years prior to coming to Valpo.

He has continued pursuing his passion for painting since then, with the support of Valpo professors and his fellow students.
“My professors encouraged and supported me when I needed time to attend a gallery opening of my work, and when I would ask a fellow student to help spread the word, they would invite all of their Facebook friends, and my fan base just exploded,” said Vining, whose Facebook page is now approaching 4,000 fans.
That viral marketing reached an art teacher in a Texas elementary school, who was captivated by Vining’s art. During the fall semester, he taught her students as a live “guest artist” via videoconference from the School of Law.
“The School of Law’s information technology staff went above and beyond to set up this videoconference that was not even law-related to help me share my passion – they made it happen,” said Vining.
