Dec. 3, 2010 –Several hundred Valparaiso University students, faculty and staff joined with members of the community to celebrate the University's inaugural Christmas tree lighting Thursday, Dec. 2, 2010, with carol singing, hot chocolate and fireworks.

At about 6:20 p.m., President Mark Heckler threw the switch to light a 30-foot evergreen in multi-colored lights as well as a surrounding cluster of smaller trees covered in white lights, noting that University leaders hope to make this an annual tradition.

"It was really pretty," said Mary Ann Craft, a freshman from Kendalville, Ind. "The ceremony really helped bring all of us together as a community."
