Valparaiso University is interested in promoting good health practices as well as preventing sickness and accidents among students. The University does not assume financial responsibility for a student in case of illness or accident. The University maintains the Student Health Center for the treatment of illnesses and minor accidents. Students are responsible for the costs of such treatment if it is not covered by their medical plan.
Valpo requires students to carry health insurance while attending the University. This policy protects a family’s investment should unexpected medical issues arise. We also know that people seek healthcare at earlier stages when they possess insurance. Early assessment and treatment is particularly important in a highly residential environment such as our campus.
Valparaiso University sponsored insurance plan is offered through
All full-time graduate students taking nine or more credit hours and full-time undergraduate and full-time law students taking 12 or more credit hours and part-time law students are automatically enrolled in this insurance Plan at registration, unless proof of comparable coverage is furnished. New students beginning full-time enrollment during the summer who are taking six or more credit hours per summer term are eligible to enroll in this insurance Plan. Eligible students who do enroll may also insure their dependents.
Waive or Enroll in University Sponsored Insurance
Health insurance information is required annually for all new and returning undergraduates and graduate students. Instructions and reminders are sent via students’ University email accounts and home address. If students have existing health insurance, simply enter the information to complete the process. If students want to voluntarily enroll in the University’s sponsored program, they may do so during the waiver period.
Students who take no action will automatically be enrolled in and billed for the University-sponsored plan.
During the waiver period, students may access the waiver site to complete and submit a Waiver Request or to voluntarily enroll in the plan.

The sponsored policy is with United Healthcare and provides our students access to a wide national network of providers and facilities when care is necessary outside of the plan requirements.
With this plan, Valparaiso University Student Health Center (VUSHC) is your primary care provider and is responsible for the primary oversight of your care. Under this policy, when students utilize VUSHC on campus, the co-pay and deductible are waived, and covered services such as physician visits, in-house lab tests, medications, and immunizations are generally covered at 100%. Students find this to be a very convenient and cost-efficient way to meet their health care needs while attending Valpo. Any necessary specialty care is coordinated with the assistance of VUSHC.
Students covered by the Valpo sponsored plan must use the services of VUSHC first where treatment will be administered or referral issued. Expenses incurred for medical treatment rendered outside of VUSHC for which no prior approval or referral is obtained are excluded from coverage. A referral issued by VUSHC must accompany the claim when submitted.
Conditions for outside care that a VUSHC referral is not necessary:
- Medical emergency (The student must return to VUSHC for necessary follow-up care)
- When VUSHC is closed
- When service is rendered at another facility during University break or vacation periods
- Medical care received when the student is more than 50 miles from campus
- Medical care obtained when a student is no longer able to use VUSHC due to a change in student status
- Maternity, obstetrical, and gynecological care
- Mental illness treatment and substance use disorder treatment
Dependents are not eligible to use VUSHC, and therefore are exempt from the above limitations and requirements.
