Association for WoMen in Communication
Valparaiso University Student Chapter
The Association for Women in Communications (AWC) was founded as Theta Sigma Phi on April 8, 1909 by seven female journalism students at the University of Washing in Seattle. Today, the association consists of 7,500 members in more than 120 student and professional chapters across the nation and around the world.
This web of professional and student chapters links all members to provide unique networking, leadership and professional development opportunities.
The association champions the advancement of women across all communications disciplines by recognizing excellence, promoting leadership and positioning its members at the forefront of the evolving communications era.
Qualifications for membership:
*Be actively working toward a degree in one of the fields of communications
*Maintain an above average GPA at your college or university
*Demonstrate a commitment to pursue an area of communications

"Rising Star Award"
| Kelly Everling, AWC officer, was competitively selected as the top AWC student chapter member among the chapters nationally. Kelly who currently is an account executive with Healy Communications, completed an application and wrote two papers on her most outstanding accomplishments and her future goals in Communication. On the basis of these submissions, Kelly was selected to present her ideas to the delegates to the Austin AWC national conference. Kelly's expenses were also covered for her trip to the conference. | ![]() |

"Outstanding Faculty Advisor"

Dr. Bonita Neff, Associate Professor, was awarded the "Outstanding Faculty Award" at the national conference of AWC in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Neff, as advisor and founder, of the student chapter is also active professionally. She was past president of the Calumet Area professional chapter of AWC and received the "Outstanding Communicator Award" from the chapter in 1990. She represents AWC nationally on the Commission for Undergraduate and Graduate Public Relations Education. Neff is also a contributor to AWC’s Matrix Foundation. |

"Outstanding Chapter Recognition"
| The student chapter of AWC at Valparaiso University was recognized as one of the "Outstanding Chapters" in the United States. The chapter's work with NBC on their winter coat drive, their development of innovative programming (internship panel/recent grad panel) and overall involvement of membership in activities that were interdisciplinary and service-oriented were acknowledged. Holly Orr as President during this period was recognized for her positive leadership and for providing an attitude of being sensitive to student needs. | ![]() |
