Chi's volunteering for Rebuilding Together
Scholarship
Jackie
Kondratko, Scholarship Chair
Jackie.Kondratko
For Chi Omega, scholarship is one of our
number one priorities. Our chapter earned the highest GPA of all VU
Greek organizations for fall 2003 and 2004. Our Fall 2004 cumulative
chapter GPA, 3.452, was the highest of any Greek organization in 9
years. 45 sisters (of 60 total) earned 3.0's or
higher for the spring 2005 semester and four earned perfect 4.0's,
the highest amount from any VU sorority. Consistency and greatness
are important assets of Chi Omega scholarship. Sisters who receive
good grades are acknowledged every week with "Smarty Pants" awards.
Our weekly "Skippy Jar" prizes also provide incentive for members to
go to all classes.
As soon as members join the sorority they are encouraged
to succeed scholastically. New Members are given study buddies who
help them with classes throughout their first semester as Chi's.
And sisters can always be found studying in our chapter room or
on Chi O corridor.
It's a great convenience
for all Chi's to have 50 other women at their disposal who are willing
to help and give advice on classes and professors. Our Chi O academic
advisor, Nursing Professor Amy Cory, is always around to offer assistance,
as well. .
It's a little bit easier to get good grades when you enjoy
your professors and classes. Here's a list of our sisters' favorites

Chi Omegas love helping out in the Valpo
area. Sisters volunteer for local establishments and programs such
as Hilltop House, Walt's Place, and tutoring. Every spring, several
sisters get together to volunteer for Rebuilding Together.
The annual philanthropy event for
our Chi Omega chapter is Make-A-Swish for Make-A-Wish. The
event is a 3-on-3 basketball tournament held every Spring. Teams
are organized and pay fees to participate, all of which goes to
Make-A-Wish. Additional funds are encouraged the day of and prior
to the event. Several businesses in the area donate gifts for participants.
A favorite activity of the day is Pie-A-Chi. Students pay $1 to
enter a raffle, and if their name is pulled throughout the day,
they get to pie any member of Chi Omega in the face. No hard feelings
of course - it's for a good cause :). .
The date for Alpha Lambda's spring 2008
Make-A-Swish for Make-A-Wish will be announced soon! Please
contact our Community Service Chair, Jenny Halbert, to find out
more information to participate. Each team of 3 pays $15
to enter, and raffles for Pie-A-Chi are only $1 each. Remember all
proceeds go to the Make-A-Wish Foundation so sign up to participate
today!
The Make-A-Wish Foundation is the official philanthropy of
Chi Omega, both for our Alpha Lambda chapter and nationally.
Since its inception in 1980, Make-A-Wish has fulfilled the
wishes and dreams of over 144,000 children with life-threatening
illnesses. For many children, the wishes they are granted such as
going to Disney World with their families or having a playground
built in their bakyard help ease the pain of their conditions and
let them have a day in which they can forget about their illnesses
and be happy with their families and friends. Make-A-Wish is now
celebrating its 25th anniversary! Click below to learn more about
the Foundation and how you can donate to help them continue their
special work!

Sisterhood
Caroline
Crafton, Sisterhood Chair

Official sisterhood
events are typically held four to five times per semester, but groups
of sisters can always be found hanging out and having unofficial
sisterhood activities. This past semester our intrepid sophomores
held 5 events in September alone. The juniors and seniors have had
a tough act to follow and have been valiantly planning wonderful
events for November and December!

Chi Omega prides itself in positively contributing
to the Valparaiso University campus. The women of Chi Omega are
highly involved in several organizations and activities outside
of the sorority. Many participate in on-campus jobs and academic
groups related to their majors. Six sisters are in VU Athletics,
including soccer, track & field, and cheerleading. Campus intramurals
is a favorite activity for sisters to enjoy together. Chi Omega
participates in intramural indoor and outdoor soccer, basketball,
volleyball, and flag football.

This
semester Alpha Lambda has decided to take a break from our usually
hectic social schedule to focus on the benefits of creating a strong
sisterhood and participating in even more philanthropy events. However,
the sisterhood is hoping to take a tenative step back into the social
arena very soon!
