By now, we hope we have convinced you that
fraternity membership is a beneficial thing, and that Lambda Chi Alpha is
one of the best fraternities around. Of course it is our belief that it is
THE BEST!
If you are interested in
joining Lambda Chi Alpha at Valpo, here are the initial actions you should
take and a summary of what you should expect from there.
1.
The Valparaiso University men's rush kickoff for all
fraternities will be held on Friday January 9, 2009 from 5:00 pm - 6:30 pm in
the Union Great Hall. This is a great opportunity to pick up our rush event
calendar.
2. Attend our Rush Events.
You must attend a sufficient number of our events to give our members the
opportunity to get to know you. It is difficult to get to thoroughly know
the many attendees in 2-3 weeks so the more time we can get to interact with
you makes for a much more accurate decision process.
3. On January 29 you will be brought up for a vote
of the our active chapter to determine whether or not you'll be extended a
"bid" and we submit our bid list into Greek life. (A bid is an offer to join our
fraternity. In the simplest form, the question for our members is whether
you can benefit from membership in our fraternity and whether our fraternity
will likely benefit from you becoming a member.)
4. On January 30 you will
turn in a bid along with $20 to Ballroom A at the HUE listing your fraternity preference. The
office of Greek life
will now match the Rushees' bids to the fraternities' bid lists and notify
the parties.
5. Assuming that you are
offered a bid, you will go through an
association ceremony and become an associate of our chapter. Associates are
provided pins to wear in order to display to others that they are an
associate member of Lambda Chi Alpha.
6. After you become an
associate member, our chapter will soon conduct a Big Brother - Little
Brother ceremony. The purpose of this ceremony is to match each associate
with an initiated member. That initiated member will be the associate's "Big
Brother" and assist in mentoring and educating the associate member about
our fraternity and other aspects of Greek life. We have an officer within
our chapter whose sole function is educating our membership through a
Fraternity Education program. That officer will oversee the process
with the assistance of a Big Brother-Little Brother coordinator to see to it
that every associate member receives a proper fraternal education.
7. Eight-to-ten weeks after
you are associated, you will be brought up before the membership a second
time in order for it to vote on whether you will be initiated. The
membership will consider each associate's participation with and
representation of the chapter, overall morale and excitement about Lambda
Chi Alpha, and other things, including academic and financial
responsibility. Upon receiving the necessary vote, the associate will be
allowed to participate in our fraternity's initiation ritual and thereafter
become an initiated brother once he has successfully completed the
initiation ritual. Lambda Chi Alpha's initiation ritual is universally used
among all chapters and has been in existence, virtually unchanged, since
1913.
