There are about 25 members in the Student Alumni Association, representing each college and each class, as well as a wide variety of majors and other campus involvement. We are proud that our members are active leaders across campus! The variety of personalities and leadership styles is one of the things that make our organization stand out from the rest.
Four officers oversee the general membership of the organization. We have a president, a 1st vice president, a 2nd vice president, and a secretary/treasurer. These officers are selected by the members of the Student Alumni Association each spring and they each fulfill their term for one academic year.
Each member of the Student Alumni Association is required to serve on at least one committee or as the leader of at least one project per year. Each committee selects a chair person from amongst themselves. This person is in charge of making sure that the committee's tasks are completed.
The Student Alumni Association meets every other Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. in Loke Hall. Meetings consist of event and project updates, general information, committee meetings, food and, of course, fun! All meetings are mandatory unless an excuse is given in advance.
All members are required to attend all general membership meetings. Also, attendance is mandatory at all of the Student Alumni Association functions on campus. Absences are excused if requested in advance; however, failure to notify an officer or the adviser will result in an unexcused absence. Two unexcused absences are allowed to accrue before a member is brought before the officers for membership review. All members are required to sit on at least one planning committee per year, and are expected to work together to plan all aspects of their event or project.
The Student Alumni Association is not only a fun and enjoyable organization to be a part of, but also comes with many perks! Becoming a part of this organization enhances communication skills, organization and management, and leadership abilities. We also learn a lot of inside information about the university. Members of the Student Alumni Association also are invited to various events with the VU Alumni Association Board of Directors throughout the year. Getting to know the alumni is a great networking tool for the future.
One huge benefit of the Student Alumni Association is the buddy system with the VU Alumni Association. Each member is paired up with a member of the VU Alumni Association Board of Directors based on interests, majors, affiliations, geography, etc. This is a great way to make connections for your future, not to mention exchanging stories comparing Valpo now and then.
The Student Alumni Association is always looking for new leaders! We typically conduct our recruitment process in the spring semester, however we do welcome members throughout the year as interest arises. Each applicant must be enrolled as a full-time student with a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5. Applicants are required to fill out an application and attend an informal interview with our officers and adviser.
If you are interested in becoming a member of the Student Alumni Association, you may contact President Katie Effertz at Katie.Effertz@valpo.edu, send an e-mail to firstname.lastname@example.org, or stop by the office of alumni relations in Loke Hall.
