Welcome back all!

As you may or may not have known (you should have!), we had our second live remote of the year at Wings, Etc., one of our great sponsors at WVUR. This one, though, had a little competition: our sports directors Dave Schroeder and Keaton Gillogly competed against VUTV’s Jeff Greco (also a DJ at WVUR) and Julian Vigliano in the “Wall Challenge.” For those who are unaware of what that is, you have one hour to eat 16 of their hottest wings. Trust me, I had one and my mouth was smokin’! Well, that didn’t phase much of our competition; Julian won by getting all of them done in 15 minutes. Dave got it in 16 minutes, while Keaton finished in 18. Things didn’t turn out so great for Jeff; he didn’t finish and also had some problems that I won’t explain here.

All in all, the event was a great time. We had a ton of people there even before the Monday Night Football Game.

In other Event news, Dreams of University, our first opener at SourceStock, performed a cover of ‘Just Dance’ at the concert. Well, they emailed us a recorded version of the song, and we put it on PSI so you can play it! Make sure you listen to it and play it on your shows! It sounds awesome and even has some auto tune.

This Sunday, I get to announce Valpo men’s basketball at Michigan State! I’ve known this for over a month (had to keep it quite), but am really excited to do this game!

Keep checking the blog and stop by my office hours from 12-2:30 Tuesday and Thursday if you need something!

Two weeks ago, my assistant Katie Hennessey and I went to New York City for the annual CMJ Music Conference and Festival. It was my second time attending the conference, and it was a great success. The schedule for nearly every day was as follows:

Wake up/get free hotel breakfast
Go listen to panels/speakers talking about the music/radio industry
Meet up with the record promoters we do business with weekly
Sightsee a bit
Go to concerts

It was a busy, busy week, but it was a lot of fun, and a good experience. Some of the speakers and panelists were really cool to hear. We heard a panel on environmental sustainability in the music industry that was probably my favorite. Some of the facts about how wasteful the industry can be was pretty shocking, and learning a bit about it can help us make the station more green. Also, Andrew W.K. was an excellent presenter, and gave a pretty great motivational speech. One of the phrases I remember was “just keep doing what you love with maximum intensity.” Good advice.

One of my other favorite times was the industry vs. stations kickball game. We met up in a park in Brooklyn for a kickball game that put station music directors up against a bunch of the record promoters we talk to each week. It ended up being a lot of fun socializing with these people, and finally meeting them after nothing but phone conversation for a long time. We try to focus on having quality relationships with these promoters, and this was definitely nice.

After that, the evenings were all about concerts. Lots of fun was had, and many awesome new bands were discovered. Here are the top five bands I would recommend checking out that we saw at CMJ: Au Revoir Simone, Headlights, You Can Be A Wesley, Still Flyin’, and Free Energy.

When I first started with WVUR, I was a DJ with my friend Nate. We had no previous experience and knew none of the terms. So for the good of mankind, I’ll explain the terms that are commonly used.

Ramp - Not what you walk up, it’s talking over the end or beginning of a song as it is playing. If you perfect this you can sound really professional.

Sweeper - This is a 3-10 second audio clip that makes the transition between songs a little smoother. Often times this includes station information.

Voice Track - Recording your show ahead of time with your voice and music pre-loaded. This is commonly done for late night shifts.

Well, I hope this little article brought some insight into the world that is radio.

Have a nice weekend! The weather is amazing!

In addition to being the WVUR webmaster, I’m a member of the WVUR Sports staff, broadcasting numerous Crusader sports contests and analyzing them on Your Crusader Sports Source (6-7:00 P.M. every Wednesday). Right now, Peter Berg and I are in Milwaukee to call the women’s soccer team’s action at the Horizon League Championships, and we are having a great time so far…

On the way to Milwaukee, we watched Miracle, a fantastic sports movie about the U.S. Hockey Team’s victory over the Soviet Union in the 1980 Winter Olympics. We are also eating great food, passing Miller Park and the Allen-Bradley Clock Tower (world’s largest four-faced clock) on the way to the field, and we’re now in the championship game. Valpo played a great game against Wright State in the semis, and they will face Milwaukee for the tournament title on Sunday. Because the Wright State match was the WVUR Game of the Week, the Milwaukee match will become WVUR Game of the Week #2! Broadcast starts at 12:40 P.M. on 95.1-FM, WVUR. It should be a great game to follow, but that’s enough of me for tonight. I’ll talk some more about this at another time.

Happy birthday, Sesame Street!

This is the link to the blog schedule for WVUR managers. The plan is to have 2 blog entries “each week,” which does contain some overlap when months begin and end. Each manager should have one post per month unless otherwise noted. As General Manager, Cameron can post an entry whenever his little heart pleases.

Every week contains the names of 2 departments and a date. This indicates who needs to blog and what date indicates the start of your “blogging week.” I will also send email notifications to managers to remind you of your posting dates in case you forget or are confused.

These are the “rules” for the special blogging weeks. The last 2 weeks in December have “XMAS” listed. During this time, I’d like to have everyone write a “Christmas post” in addition to your regular assigned monthly post. In spring break, the word “optional” is listed. Naturally, anyone who is scheduled to blog during those weeks does not have to do so, but anyone who wants to post something about their spring break is more than welcome to. Finally, May has “Seniors, TBA” scheduled. Everyone should write a final post about your year whenever you choose to do so. For seniors and any other non-returning managers, this will be more like a “Goodbye” post of some type.

That’s all I have for everyone today. I’ll be back soon for my November post. As always, ask me any questions you have.

Happy birthday, Lutherans! (It’s not just Halloween today)

Hi all,

First off, thanks for checking the blog. I hope everyone is enjoying their time at WVUR and having a wonderful first semester. I look forward to hearing all the DJs, News and Sports staffers put the finishing touches on a great semester and looking to start a new one.

Well, I’m Mike Targonski, the Events Director at WVUR; I am also a member of sports staff. As the Events Director, I had a pretty important job at the beginning of the year and that was to put on SourceStock. Let me tell you, I never thought in a million years I’d be throwing a concert. I began working with Cameron, our General Manager, and Michelle Niehaus, the past Events Director, in April for the show. I spent a lot of time in Valpo this summer, working as an Orientation Assistant as well as making trips to meet with Cameron and some other people for the show. When we got back to school, boy, was it hectic.

The week of SourceStock, I spent every minute that I wasn’t sleeping nor in class at the station working on schedules, making sure we had everything ready for the bands, making sure we had everything ordered for the show, and also praying that everything was going to be ok.

The day of…it seemed like I was professional. I had no worries (for some odd reason) and didn’t think anything was going to go work…nothing did! The show was great, we had a huge crowd, and the members of the band were fantastic. And I slept forever the following day!

I wouldn’t say I still have a SourceStock hang over because I have done a lot for events and the station. I was able to finally announce some games for sports and have been planning other small events with other organizations. But things are a lot more calm in my department nowadays.

Anyway, I look forward to basketball season in terms of broadcasting. I love sports and can’t wait until we get the seasons underway…next Sunday! But that’s all for now. Stop by my office hours if you need anything!

Mike Targonski, Events Director

2 months ago, everything was different. As a management staff, we were preparing for SourceStock 2009 and the school year hadn’t even started yet. Now, I’m just thankful that I finally get a break. Fall Break is a great time for me because I can take some time off, but I can also catch up with my radio and school work.

I really enjoy being here at Valpo, especially at WVUR. I’m the station’s webmaster, a DJ, and a member of sports staff. That, combined with classes, keeps me pretty busy, but it’s fun, too. Over the next few days, I’ll host a volleyball broadcast, call play-by-play for a men’s soccer broadcast, and I’m also preparing to put a new banner on the website’s home page. It’s a new venture called “WVUR Game of the Week” where we promote a special broadcast we’ll be airing over the week, like an important conference match or an instate rivalry game. Plus, the time away from classes gives me an opportunity to catch up on school work. That way, I can feel less overwhelmed by the time classes resume and I’ll have less work to do later. Let’s not forget, I’m going to spend a lot of time doing nothing. It’s well deserved considering how hard we’ve all had to work over the last two months.

Overall, I’m really looking forward to Fall Break. It’ll be a great opportunity for everyone to relax and recharge before returning to the daily grind of work and school. That’s it for Post #1. Hope you all enjoyed.

Happy birthday, Jim Rome!

It’s crazy to think that another school year is right around the corner in a couple of days and with this fresh start comes our preparations for one of the largest concert events on campus for the entire year. On September 12th, AP Fall Ball co-headliner The Academy Is… will be hitting the VU campus with rising stars Sing It Loud and Indiana’s own Dreams of University.

It’s going to be a crazy awesome show and it’s FREE to VU students, professors, alumni, and staff. Don’t go to VU? No worries my friend, tickets are only $10 for this crazy sweet show. Bring a friend or three, because this is arguably the best event to hit campus all year. Tickets are available at the Harre Union Info Desk or online at this site. If you need a map to the venue, click here or send me an e-mail to Cameron.Banga@valpo.edu

I wanted to give you guys some links in case you were interested in learning more about the bands. Take a listen and get pumped for the show.

During my office hours I did a little cleaning up and browsing through the cd stacks. A cd that caught my eye was Breakfast By the Dunes by Twittering Machine. I had to listen to this cd right away, for any band that was called Twittering Machine was worth at least one listen. Twittering Machine has a jazzy feel with whispery vocals and a sultry tone of tender Latin rhythms. That last sentence was from the sticker on the cover of the cd created by the record company.

Originally I thought that this band borrowed their name from the oh-so-popular micro-blogging service Twitter. I was wrong. This band released this debut album in 2003, while Twitter was publicly released in August of 2006. How interesting. Also, the first song on the cd is Birds. I can’t make this stuff up. It’s pretty crazy that this band had the name of a now insanely influential internet powerhouse three entire years before Twitter was even created.

I have to say, this could be my new relaxation cd. It’s pretty smooth.
