Crusaders End Season Against Milwaukee Print E-mail
Written by WVUR Sports

The Valparaiso University volleyball team went into Saturday's match having split their regular season contests against Milwaukee, but the Panthers turned the tides in the semifinal match of the Horizon League tournament.  Milwaukee came out firing from the get-go, winning set one easy.  The Crusaders put some pressure on the Panthers in both set two and three, but Milwaukee used a 12-point run to stop Valpo.  Jena Berg and Kerri Schuh had nine kills apiece for the Panthers.  Tara Diebler had 14 for Valpo in the losing effort.  The Crusaders fell to 22-10 overall, and 12-5 in conference.  The careers for Haley Wise, Kim Bukowski, and Angie Porche have come to an end, as well as the 2009 season.

Valpo Holds Their Own Against National Champions Print E-mail
Written by Keaton Gillogly

The Valparaiso Crusader men’s basketball team was at Chapel Hill taking on the North Carolina Tar Heels Sunday evening for the third time in three years. VU hung tough with the defending national champions but fell 88-77. Valparaiso clawed their way back to 31-28 with 2:16 to go in the first half thanks to Brandon Wood who had 10 points in the first 20 minutes.  The Tar Heels went on a 9-0 run to open the second half to take a 46-31 lead. Carolina extended their lead out to 23 points eight minutes into the second half. However, Brandon McPherson and Brandon Wood helped cut that lead to nine with under two minutes to go, but could get no closer in the 11 point loss. The Brandons combined for 50 points going 10-16 from behind the ARC.

Crusader Volleyball Falls at Milwaukee Print E-mail
Written by WVUR Sports

In their final Horizon League trip per the regular season, the Valparaiso Crusaders could not hold off the hot Milwaukee Panthers, falling 17-25, 25-12, 25-19, 25-22.  The Crusaders had a similar storyline in set one against Milwaukee at the ARC; they won set one even while struggling at the end of the set, before Milwaukee took it to them in set two.  The difference, this one didn't take five sets.  Milwaukee took over and never looked back, securing their seventh straight match win.  Junior Tara Diebler paced the Crusaders with a match high 20 kills, but lacked a supporting cast.  Angie Porche knocked home 12 kills, as she surpassed 2,000 career kills in her career.  Maddie Sueppel, Jena Berg, and Kerri Schuh had 12 kills for the Panthers, while Natalie Schmitting had 10 kills.  The Crusaders will take on Green Bay tomorrow in the season finale, looking for a victory to finish second in the Horizon League.
