VU Study Centers Abroad

Cambridge, England

Who?

You must be a sophomore, junior or senior. Generally, a GPA of 3.0 is required.

Almost all Valpo students can study abroad in Cambridge without delaying graduation IF they plan carefully with their academic advisor. Up to 18 students may study at the Cambridge Center each semester.

What?

One semester of study, either fall or spring, at VU’s own study center in Cambridge (not affiliated with Cambridge University). Courses for the 2007-2009 academic years include:

ART 311 Art Appreciation 3 credits
THEO 490 Topics: History of Early Christian Centuries 3 credits
HIST 351 English History and Culture 3 credits
GS 390 Topics in English Life and Culture 3 credits
SOC 390 English Perceptions of America & Americans 3 credits
(Fulfills Social Analysis Req.)

Additional courses may be offered, depending on the academic field of the resident director(s).

Independent study can always be arranged with VU faculty. Contact your advisor for details.

Students may also take one class at nearby Anglia Ruskin University by special arrangement (spring semester). See the ISO for details.

Where?

An old, medieval market town and the seat of one of Europe's most prestigious universities, Cambridge provides a perfect setting in which to experience British culture and academic tradition. As one of England's major cities, Cambridge is filled with attractive shops, museums, restaurants, and pubs. London is only a one-hour train ride to the south. Participants in the program live in two attached housing facilities, with bedrooms, sitting rooms, study areas, kitchens, and other facilites.

How?

You must apply for the program through the International Studies Office. The ISO is located in Meier Hall 137, phone 464-5333.

You should consult with your academic advisor and the ISO as early as possible. Freshman year is not too early to begin your inquiries about study abroad. Careful planning will ensure your classes taken in Cambridge can be used for graduation requirements. Consult the VU Catalog under "International Study Programs" for details.

How Much? (for current fees, see the Cost Sheet)

Air fare: Students can expect to spend $1000.00 - $1200.00 round-trip between Chicago and London. Many of the discount flights described in newspapers are for short-term stays, and are not useful for a semester abroad. The ISO will make every effort possible to book the lowest-priced, most convenient air tickets for the group.

Tuition, Room, and General Fee: Students pay the same tuition and fees they would pay in Valparaiso. All VU study abroad programs are considered "in-residence," so all financial aid (except work-study and some ‘on-campus’ aid) applies.

Study Center Fee: Each student who studies in Cambridge pays an additional study center fee, which is used by the program for group trips, activities, and miscellaneous center expenses.

Spending Money: The exact amount will differ depending on individual preferences and exchange rates, but generally you can expect to spend $4500.00 - $5500.00. Depending on which Eurail Pass you choose, you can expect to pay an additional $291.00 - $696.00. The Britrail Pass is usually priced in the $199.00 - $529.00 range.
