MEET THE DIRECTOR - REUTLINGEN, GERMANY

professor szaniszlo

Valparaiso University's administered study abroad programs have resident directors who manage the programs on a day-to-day basis, teach two courses for the students and coordinate group excursions and cultural activities.  Since 1968, VU has sent 19 different faculty members, and their families, to the Reutlingen, Germany program for two, and in some cases, three year appointments.

ZSUZSANNA SZANISZLO, the resident director for 2009-2011, is wonderfully suited to meet the needs of the program and engage our students in a cultural and academic experience in Germany.  Zsuzsanna joined the faculty at VU over seven years ago in the department of mathematics and computer science.  She has a B.Sc. from Hungary (1990), an M.Sc. from Canada (1992), a Teacher’s Certificate from Hungary (1992),  and a PhD from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (1996). Her academic interests are in discrete mathematics and mentoring students. She teaches a wide range of courses to math majors and non math majors alike.

In Germany, Zsuzsanna will teach the German Life and Culture Course to the students, taking them on cultural excursions and facilitating their cross-cultural understanding of Germany and Europe.  In addition, she will offer a math course which will count towards the general education requirement for all VU students, Mathmatical Ideas (MATH 120).

Zsuzsanna is looking forward to taking the students on a group trip to her home country, Hungary, during her directorship in Germany.  She is also looking forward to teaching her 4 year old daughter, Marika, to speak German.
