VITAL Announcement

The Provost's Office is pleased to announce the creation of the Valparaiso Institute for Teaching and Learning (VITAL). Beginning next fall, this new institute will consolidate the current work of the Teaching Resource Center and the Instructional Design Center in order to support, promote, and enhance Valparaiso University's community of learning.

In order to accomplish this mission, the Institute will:

  • Support faculty throughout the stages of their career and in their various roles.
  • Help faculty understand the pedagogy needed to provide innovative and enriching learning environments.
  • Advance the scholarship of teaching and learning.
  • Promote and recognize teaching excellence and pedagogical innovation.
  • Collaborate with departments to develop, deliver, and assess student learning outcomes and program curricula.
  • Play a key role in University strategic planning with respect to academic initiatives.

The VITAL team includes:

Cynthia Rutz, director of Faculty Development

Jen Gregory, director of Instructional Design

Jodie Reminder, assistant director of Instructional Design

Laura Spickard, VITAL administrative assistant

Over the next few weeks, Cynthia, Jen, and Jodie will be meeting with deans, department chairs, and faculty focus groups to explore how the new institute can best serve Valpo's faculty. The team will develop a strategic plan for faculty development over the summer. The plan will be unveiled at the Fall Faculty Workshop in August.
