soulpurpose

Soul Purpose performs plays for Sunday morning worship services, Sunday school, and Bible class convocations, adult forums, spiritual retreats, and dinner-theatre occasions. Programs can be shaped to suit the needs of individual congregations. The troupe can also make creative presentations of lectionary readings, lead discussions of the nature of college life, and suggest prayers and hymns to accompany the plays.

To schedule the performance of a single Soul Purpose play or an evening of plays, songs, prayers, and discussion, contact Dr. John Steven Paul, Department of Theatre, Valparaiso University, Valparaiso IN 46383, call (219) 464-5092, or e-mail john.paul@valpo.edu. References and recommendations upon request. In return for a performance Soul Purpose requests

  1. travel expense payment of $300,
  2. one meal per day or a $10 meal reimbursement for each member of the traveling company,
  3. one night's lodging for the traveling company if the sponsoring congregation is more than 75 miles from Valparaiso. Gifts in support of the Soul Purpose ministry beyond expenses are at the discretion of the congregation. Such donations make this drama ministry possible.

We understand that many congregations hold Saturday evening services as part of their regular weekly series of services. Since a Saturday evening performance adds significantly to the Soul Purpose travel schedule, we charge an additional $100 for a Saturday evening service.

Dr. John Steven Paul and members of Soul Purpose offer drama workshops in conjunction with Soul Purpose performances. Geared to high school youth and young adults, Soul Purpose workshops combine Bible study with an improvisational approach to creating plays for performance in the chancel. Workshops (4-5 hours in length) accommodate 10-25 participants. A great idea for a youth program and, perhaps, the first step in creating a liturgical drama troupe at your church. Inquire about available dates. Fee: $500.
