Welcome to the Theatre Department at Valparaiso University where fifty students majoring and minoring in Theatre are taught by a faculty of four full-time professors and a variety of visiting professors and guest artists specializing in such fields as stage design, directing, and dance. The department offers a comprehensive array of courses in acting, costume, dance, directing, dramatic literature, playwriting, scenic and lighting design and technology and applied and interactive theatre. In a weekly meeting, called Colloquium, students meet to talk about careers in the theatre.
There is a very active theatre production program including main stage performances and community outreach productions to churches and schools. Each year, the University Theatre joins with the Music Department to produce a Broadway musical or an opera. Other productions are directed by advanced students in our studio theatre. There is also an annual main stage dance concert. Auditions for all Theatre Department productions are open to students regardless of major and you can volunteer to work backstage or in the control booths.
With Chicago only fifty miles away, theatre students at Valparaiso University can benefit from the many opportunities in the most important city in the country for live theatre. The Department participates in the American College Theatre Festival, which brings nearly a thousand theatre students from the Great Lakes states together annually to share productions and participate in workshops. We'd be happy to greet you on campus or at one of our productions. Until then, have a look around our site and contact us for further information.
