Ashley Busiel decided to transfer from Harper College in Palatine, Ill., to Valparaiso University to complete her psychology degree.
Though she came to Valpo in part for its new bowling team, she also found small class sizes and a friendly atmosphere.
“I looked at school size. I really liked that the teacher would know your name. At big schools, there’s not a lot of interaction,” said Busiel, a junior.
The location, only an hour and a half from her family’s home in Elk Grove Village, Ill., was a plus, too.
Busiel also appreciates how easy making friends is at Valpo, where she sees many of the same people in her classes, something she didn’t predict.
“It’s forming friendships that you didn’t expect. It’s an easy campus to get to know people,” she said.
Like many other students, she loves the Harre Union, which opened in January 2009 and offers a central dining location for the campus, among many other amenities.
The new union, Busiel said, helps everyone by serving as a focal point to bring the campus community together.
“You see a lot of the same people because the same people eat at the same time every day,” she said.
