Valpo supports undergraduate research by offering several opportunities for students to get funding for their work. Each year, the Creative Work and Research Committee (CWRC) grants $10,000 for undergraduate research: $5,000 for faculty development and support and $5,000 directly to students for expenses. Students can use these funds either for equipment, supplies, photocopying, and other research needs or for travel, meals, and lodging to present their findings at conferences. The University also offers a limited amount of free housing in the residence halls, in the form of Summer Research Housing Grants, to students who are on campus doing research for at least 30 hours per week in the summer. Though every effort is made to accommodate requests, space limitations and funding determine how many awards are given each year. For applications and deadline information about these grants, visit our Funding Opportunities page.
Each year, Valpo recognizes outstanding student research projects at the Celebration of Undergraduate Scholarship. The dean of each college has the option to choose at least one student project to appear as part of the “Dean’s Choice Presentations” at the Celebration. In addition, a panel of faculty, staff, and Valpo alumni judge all of the student projects and choose the recipients of the “Board of Directors” awards. Student attendees at the Celebration also select a “Student Choice” award winner. The Board of Directors award winners receive a certificate of merit and a gift certificate. They also have the opportunity to present their work at a luncheon with the University’s Board of Directors.
