Parking Policies

Special parking areas are provided as a priviledge for VU students and employees. Operators of registered vehicles have the privilege of parking in specified areas, but having a registered vehicle does not ensure the availability of a parking space. The responsibility of finding a legal parking space rests with the vehicle operator. Vehicle registration may be revoked for persons who are repeated violators of traffic and parking regulations.

A legal parking space is defined as an area specifically designated for parking and typically defined by parking blocks and/or painted surface lines and indicated with appropriate signage. Areas not identified as parking areas should be construed as “no parking” zones. Parking on campus is prohibited on grass and in areas where it would mar landscaping, create a safety hazard, and interfere with the use of University facilities. Such areas include, but are not limited to: posted no parking zones, yellow zones, fire access areas, crosswalks, sidewalks, areas designated for special vehicles or other special uses, and roadways serving parking lots and buildings. Parking in spaces marked for the disabled are restricted to vehicles identified with appropriate tags or license plates or a special indicator issued by VUPD.

Parking lots on campus are designated for special uses and are identified by color-coding. Holders of vehicle registration permits are restricted to parking in areas identified by a color that matches the color on the registration decal. Such areas may be identified by more than one color. Designated parking areas are marked by signage and the following color-coding:

YELLOW: Identifies parking areas for university faculty and staff.

ORANGE: Identifies parking areas for seniors with a campus address and commuter students (those living in 807 Mound, University Park, fraternity houses, law school students, and other commuters living off-campus).

BLUE: Identifies parking areas for sophomores and juniors who are living in campus residence halls.

RED: Identifies parking areas for freshman living in campus residence halls.

ORANGE RESIDENT SENIORS: Identifies seniors living on-campus in residence halls. Resident seniors may park in any blue or orange lot. This is only for seniors living in on-campus residence halls.
Employees may only park in lots designated for employees (YELLOW) or in mixed lots. Employees may park only in the areas posted with yellow employee signage. Students may park in any unposted legal areas of a lot if it has your designated color marked at the entrance to the lot.

Lot 18 - Commuters are allowed in posted commuter areas.

Lot 12 - Freshman are allowed only in posted freshman areas.

The person to whom a vehicle is registered on campus is accountable for parking violations with that vehicle, including the unauthorized use of an assigned registration decal. Registration decals issued to employees provide parking privileges only for the employee; it is a violation of parking regulations for an non-employee driving a vehicle registered by an employee to park in a parking area designated for employees. University-owned vehicles are provided access to all parking areas as necessary to provide appropriate services to campus facilities.

VU welcomes visitors to its campus and provides parking spaces that are reserved for visitors throughout campus. Visitors with motor vehicles who will be on campus for more than a day should obtain a visitor’s parking permit from VUPD. It is the responsibility of members of the University community to make parking arrangements with VUPD for visitors participating in special workshops, conferences, and other campus meetings. Except for special events, a visitor’s pass must be obtained for the vehicle of any guest of VU employees and students to provide parking priviledges between 2am and 5pm Monday through Friday. Visitors who are illegally parked are subject to being fined.
