1938

Charles Richman of Hilton Head Island, S.C., celebrated his 90th birthday with family and friends. He plays golf and sings in his church choir and in the Hilton Head Chorale Society.

1940

Waldemar W. Weber and wife Evelyn (Herscher ’41) celebrated 65 years of marriage on Sept. 19, 2007. Waldemar says he thanks God and Valpo for all the wonderful years they have had together.

1947

Lois (Shearer) Kowitz and her husband William Lott reside in Roseville, Calif. They both like to ski, golf and travel. (Lois’ first husband, Martin Kowitz ’44, died in 2001. She and William married in February 2006.)

Geraldine (Duever) Laffoon was the organist at the Aug. 12, 50th anniversary service at Lutheran Church of Our Saviour in Monticello, Ind., where she also resides.

1949

Harold “Jerry” Hanna LL.B. is 86. He is enjoying his senior years with wife Franc at home in East Wenatchee, Wash. He is a retired district court judge, retired attorney (56 years of practice) and has served 13 years in the Washington State Senate. He also served four years as legal counsel to former Dixey Lee Ray. He is a veteran of World War II, combat infantry­man with the 83rd Division. Harold played basketball on the 1941-’42 Crusaders basketball team.

1950

William Cross retired in June 2005 from teaching sociology at Illinois College in Jacksonville, Ill. He continues research on impacts such as Katrina and the tsunami and presents findings at academic con­ferences. He is a deacon in his congregation and serves as president of the Jacksonville Conference of Churches. He also is active in Chapter 393 of AARP; is a liaison for the Illinois College Sociology Depart­ment for The Family Network of the local Cooperative Extension Office in Jacksonville. He continues to be a member of the transit committee in Jacksonville.

Lolita Parkhurst was honored in June 2007 by St. John’s Lutheran Church in Allegan, Mich., with a celebration dinner and a plaque for her 15 years of service as their organist and choir director. Since retiring in 1988, Lolita joined with three local bands and continues playing clarinet. She is a member of the South Shore Concert Band. She also chairs the local committee to preserve the one-room school house at Allegan Fair Grounds and is the president of the Allegan County Retired School personnel.

1951

Robert Kallies retired in January 1990, after more than five years in the Air Force during Korea; then 33 years flying for Delta Airlines. He now lives in Naples, Fla.

1953

Shirley (Frank) Gehl and husband Raymond have lived in Bella Vista, Ark., for 22 years. They have been married for 54 years and have three adult children, six grandchildren, and a great-grandchild.

Warren Hoger of Wheaton, Ill., retired from Walther Lutheran High School, but is in his 46th year of coach­ing football: two years at Concordia, River Forest; eight years at Triton Community College; and is in his 36th year at Walther High School.

Elsie (Schumacher) Walsh and husband Joseph live in Fairfield, Conn. They have five grandchildren.

1956

Lyle Muller and wife Marlene (Kliemek ’57) celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Sept. 7, 2007. Lyle and Marlene were married at Redeemer Evangelical Lutheran Church in Cicero, Ill., in 1957. Melvyn and Ruth (Stueckler ’57, ’64 M.Ed.) Carson celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on June 14, 2007.

Carol (Maass) Elwood of Cresco, Iowa, is retired from piano teaching and Musikgarten teaching, however, she still plays piano and organ for church services. She spends winters in Boca Grande, Fla., and takes extended trips with her husband, Henry, on their Harley Lehmen trike.

Izolde (Zivers) Price lives in Clinton, N.J. Since 1991 she has been visiting her native land, Latvia, every year. She has taught English to graduate students and has donated magazines to schools.

Ken Schreiber, who played football and baseball under the coaching of Emory Bauer has written a book titled “Coaching With Pride – 2001.” (See My Valpo Story on this page.)

1959

Raymond Steinwehe and his wife Joan reside in Pacific Beach, Calif. Ray is retired from Caterpillar Corp.

1960

Lawrence and JoAnn (Bode) Baietti reside in Wilmington, N.C. JoAnn serves as organist for area churches. Lawrence has served for two years at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, which began anew as St. Mary’s Episcopal-Lutheran Community.

1961

Lowell Baier won the 2008 Budweiser national conservation award in recognition of his work to protect President Theodore Roosevelt’s Elkhorn Ranch. Lowell has been active in wildlife conserva­tion for nearly 40 years. He played a major role in creating the National Conservation Leadership Institute in 2004 to assist mid-level state and federal wildlife managers in assuming leadership roles.

Marge (Quoos) Fallaw served 13 years as a “Music in the Park” volunteer manager for Chestertown, Md. She also is the founder of the series. Marge plays clarinet and is a member of her community concert band and affiliated with Historic Chestertown Tours, which provides group day trips and walking tours in Chestertown on the Eastern Shore of Maryland.

Joan (Hewitt) Fowler retired from teaching public school music. She remarried and moved to Baltimore in 2006.

Elizabeth (Horn) Frederick is working half time doing dialectical behavioral therapy at a community mental health center. Her husband, Parke, died Aug. 3, 2006.

Joseph Gapper retired from 35 years in voluntary and public health organization. He is active in good government causes, as well as hiking clubs.

Marie Johnson moved last November from Pitts­burgh to Laguna Woods, Calif., into a senior community of 18,000 seniors. She is 15 minutes from the beach with lots of activities. Marie’s three sons are Valpo alumni.

1962

Leona Irsch resides in Edwardsville, Pa. She received a D.Min. in biblical spirituality from the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia in May 2007.

Don Schroer completed the last of 40 years of serv­ice at Emory Tennis Camp, which he started when he moved to Atlanta from California to be the head men’s tennis coach for Emory. Don resides in Stone Mountain, Ga.

Brian Zeh and his wife, Mary Ellen (Sims ’64), are both retired and continue to live in Frankfort, Ind. Brian retired as CEO of St. Vincent Frankfort Hospital in 2003. He also recently retired from his part-time position as executive director of St. Vincent Frankfort Hospital Foundation. Mary Ellen retired as director of Frankfort Adult Learning Center in 2005. Their three children and their families, including five grand­children, all live less than 24 hours away.

1963

Sue (Nixon) and Bob Brems have retired and live in Coshocton, Ohio, where their grandchildren live.

Dee (Bartels) Stritof of Valparaiso serves on the Board of Directors of the Valparaiso University Guild. She has served as treasurer, vice president and president of the local Guild chapter.

1964

Kenneth Farr recently retired from the U.S. Foreign Service, where he served as an USAID health de­velop­ment officer for 27 years. Ken will continue to reside in Quito, Ecuador, and has a new e-mail address: kennethfarr@yahoo.com.

C.C. “Neil” Hartwigsen is retired from Sandia National Laboratories after more than 33 years of service. He is married to Cheryll and they have two grown children, Kristen and C.J. Robert Holtz retired at year-end, after working for R.R. Donnelley for more than 43 years. He resides in Romeoville, Ill., with wife Ardeth.

Larry Klemz of Valparaiso is president of the Valparaiso Rotary Club. He is the owner of Home Mountain Publishing Co. in Valpo, which recently was honored by Gov. Mitch Daniels with a Century Award.

Chuck and Mary (Kohlstedt ’65) Rohde reside in Lombard, Ill. They recently celebrated 40 years of marriage. They have three children and six grand­children. Chuck has retired after a 35-year career in credit management, while Mary is hoping to retire in 2008. Plans include relaxation and travel.

Ted Steege and his wife, Eva, live in Hartford, Conn. Eva is pastor of Grace Lutheran Church, and Ted is a deployed staff member for the development depart­ment of the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Phil­a­delphia (ELCA). Between them, they have four children and five grandchildren.

1965

Frank and Kathy (Boerger) Bardenhagen of Racine, Wis., are retired business owners. Both have given much time to the Guild, Valpo Admission Network and Valpo Sunday efforts at Peace Lutheran Church in Racine. Kathy served as Guild national secretary from 2001 to 2003 and has held several other leadership positions at the local and state levels. Hank, an accomplished woodworker, has donated many hand-made items for annual Guild fundraising events. Last October, the couple was awarded the VU Alumni Association’s Partners in Service Award for their significant service to the university.

Fred Lukens is a Lockheed Martin fellow with 40 years experience in aerospace electronics. He has received the Colorado State University Individual Achievement Award for contributions to the aero­space electronics industry. Fred and his wife, Helen, have been married for 40 years and reside in Colorado. They have five grown children ... a mental health counselor, mother, financial analyst, engineering student and medical student.

1966

James Beyreis of Arlington Heights, Ill., is vice president of technical training for the global fire and signaling sector at Underwriters Laboratories Inc., where he has worked for more than 40 years. In 1996 he was awarded the National Fire Protection Asso­ciation’s Distinguished Service Award and, in 1990, the Environmental Protection Agency honored him with its Stratospheric Ozone Protection Award. Last October, the VU Alumni Association presented James the Alumni Achievement Award for having achieved extraordinary success in his profession.

Eunice Eifert has been named Distinguished Professor of Theatre. She teaches at Concordia University Chicago.

Margot (Cusack) Long retired in 2003 from a 36-year career in education of the deaf. She now works as a senior move manager assisting senior citizens through the downsizing and moving process. She continues to live with her husband, Gary, in Honeoye Falls, N.Y., but contemplates moving to a warmer climate in a couple of years. Their daughter, Lindsey, is in college.

Ruth (Heerman) McConnell resides in Palatine, Ill. Her son, Jim, and his band, The Go, have a new album out titled “Howl on the Haunted Beat You Ride.” This is the band’s fourth album.

Robert Schmielau and wife Arlene (Arenz ’68) reside in Seymour, Ind. He has plans to retire as superintendent of Seymour Community Schools after the end of the current school year. He has had a 42-year career in education.

1967

Sally (Mohr) Duchow retired as director of Danville Community College Library. She currently is the project manager for the Northern Illinois Learning Resources Cooperative, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Graduate School of Library and Information Science grant in support of educating community college librarians.

Michael Fryzel is currently an attorney in Chicago. President George Bush has announced his intention to nominate Michael to be a member of the National Credit Union Administration Board, for the re­mainder of a six-year term expiring Aug. 2, 2013, and upon confirmation, designate him chairperson. Michael serves on the Illinois Governor’s Board of Credit Union Advisors. Prior to this, he served as director of the Department of Financial Institutions for Illinois and as a member of the Governor’s cabi­net. He received his M.B.A. from the University of Chicago, and his J.D. from Loyola University of Chicago School of Law.

John Imre of Chippewa Falls, Wis., has designed a wheelchair-accessible refrigerator to eliminate the problems wheelchair users and others have with conventional refrigerators. Its prototype has been built, and John holds three patents on the FREEDOMfridge. He now seeks to license the technology. For more information contact John at j.imre@att.net.

Don Langhoff has retired from parish ministry after 36 years as a Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod pastor. He and wife Sue are now enjoying life in Valparaiso where he is an associate planned giving director at VU. They look forward to renewing acquaintances when classmates and friends visit campus. Don and Sue have two children and one grandchild.

Larry Norton retired from his position as regional director for Thermo Fisher Scientific on June 30. He lives in Issaquah, Wash., and has plans to spend more time with his granddaughter, Luisa.

1968

Susan (Wille) Haase and her husband live in Chula Vista, Calif. They attend Pilgrim Lutheran Church and enjoy their two grandchildren who are 5 and 3. Susan is a part-time reading specialist.

Jane (Burger) Lohmeyer ’82 M.A.L.S. resides in Valparaiso. Jane was employed by the Portage Township Schools for 33 years. She retired in June 2007, but continues to teach art classes at Valpo. In 2003 Jane received the O.P. Kretzmann Alumni Award in recognition of her distinguished contribution and longtime exemplary service as a university employee.

David Saar, founding artistic director of Childsplay, a professional theater company for young audiences in Tempe, Ariz., was awarded the Thomas DeGaetani Award for Outstanding Lifetime Contribution to the Performing Arts Community, by the United States Institute for Theatre Technology in March. In Sep­tember, the company will celebrate its 30th season in a new performance home, the $67-million Tempe Center for the Arts.

Doug and Jan (Haase ’72) Schlak are the proud grandparents of Makayla Marie, who was born in August 2006. Doug continues to practice law at his firm in New Lenox, Ill., and Jan is a preschool teacher.

1969

Barbara (Becker) Dickenson of Batavia, Ill., retired from teaching in June 2007. She is enjoying her re­tire­ment with travel and having more time to spend with her granddaughter.

Bob McKinney and wife Eunice (Miller ’71) moved from California to Ann Arbor, Mich. Bob accepted the call as director of spiritual life at Concordia Univer­sity. Eunice is shifting her marriage and family therapy license to Michigan. Their daughter, Dereem, remains in California and teaches fifth grade at St. John’s Lutheran School, and their daughter, Lois, is a first-year student at Concordia University Ann Arbor.

LeRoy Nosbaum, president and chief executive officer of Itron, was the keynote speaker for the Na­tional Investor Relations Institute’s Investor Com­munications Awards Gala last June. He has more than 30 years of leadership and management experience with companies that supply the utility industry with metering and communications systems. LeRoy joined Itron in 1996, was promoted to CEO in 2000, and elected chairman of the board in 2002.

1970

Franklin Black J.D. has retired in Florida.

Lew Bolitho and wife Susan reside in Anthem, Ariz. After 30 years with Prudential, Lew has begun a new career with the Scottsdale Insurance Co. He is now the contract property and casualty underwriting manager for the Mid-Atlantic region. All four of their children are now grown and on their own. Two of his sons and a daughter-in-law have Valpo degrees. Jonathan and his wife, Andrea (Thien), have B.S. degrees. Brian earned an M.B.A. All received their degrees in 2003.

Stephen Dannewitz M.D. continues as a contractor delivering emergency medicine service to the Army at Fort Bliss, William Beaumont Army Medical Center in El Paso, Texas. Wife Tamera has moved to St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, working as an emergency nurse.

Stephen Furbacher accepted a director position on the board of CF Industries, a public company with headquarters in Deerfield, Ill. Stephen is president and chief operating officer of Dynegy Inc., which provides power and ancillary services to utilities and other energy companies in 15 states.

Nancy (Cordes) Hoover retired from teaching after 36 years. She travels and enjoys visiting college friends, relatives and her son, who lives in Denver. She has two grandchildren who live nearby.

Robert and Linda (Motley ’73) Nixon live in Phoenix, Ariz. Bob is a  transportation mobility manager for Pinal Gila Council for Senior Citizens. Linda is a certified nurse midwife at Phoenix Indian Medical Center. She recently completed a 24-day mission with Project Hope aboard the USNS Comfort. She provided gynecologic and prenatal care to women in Ecuador, Columbia and Haiti. The Nixons attend Christ Church Lutheran. Bob is a deacon. Linda enjoys playing in woodwind ensembles. They have three grown children: Tim, Nate and Beth.

Bill Van Ess and wife Diane enjoy life in Southbury, Conn. They are celebrating the gift of grandchild Anastasia Marie, born to daughter, Casey Brown ’94 and her husband, Brian, of Western Springs, Ill.

1971

Neal Boyer ’03 M.A.L.S. is a part-time sportswriter for the Post-Tribune, often writing about VU sports. Wife Mary just ended 20 years with the library at Valpo University and hopes to retire in a year or so.

1972

Marjorie Albohm will serve as the next president of the National Athletic Trainers Association for a four year term beginning when she is sworn in at the NATA Annual Meeting, June 2008, in St. Louis. She has served on numerous boards and committees in Indiana and the country. She currently serves dual roles as the director of business development and research at OrthoIndy and the executive director of The Orthopaedic Research Foundations. She will continue in these positions while serving at NATA president.

Donald Deye M.D., Cambridge, Minn., was awarded first-place in a national competition sponsored by the Specialized Information Publishers Foundation for creating and moderating the “MKSAP 14 Audio Companion.” The audio companion is used by physicians to prepare for their certification and recertification exams as well as to enhance their knowledge in the 11 topic areas covered.

Scott Garrett was elected to the California Health­care Institute’s Board of Directors. Scott is president and chief executive officer of Beckman Coulter Inc., a nonprofit public policy research organization, rep­resenting leading California academic institutions, biotechnology, medical device, diagnostics and phar­maceutical firms. He joined Beckman Coulter in 2002.

Donald Lewis Jr. D.D.S. of Euclid, Ohio, received a Special Citation Award from the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial surgeons during their 89th annual meeting in Hawaii. Donald is a diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He earned the designation of Certified Fraud Examiner from the Board of Regents of the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners.

Barbara Raedeke of Ballwin, Mo., serves as organist and choir director at Parkway United Church of Christ and teaches organ at Washington University, St. Louis. She has been a faculty member at Middle Ten­nessee State University and Lindenwood University and is past dean of the St. Louis chapter of the Ameri­can Guild of Organists. She is active as a recitalist and teacher.

1973

Janyce (Schur) Duesenberg of St. Louis has been active in the VU Guild, Valpo Admissions Network and the VU Parents Council. She is a retired reading specialist and teacher. She currently serves on the VU Parents Council. Last October, Janyce’s exemplary service to the university was recognized by the VU Alumni Association with its Alumni Service Award.

Brian Klafehn has been appointed president of CP Rochester, a network of services for people of all ages with a wide variety of physical disabilities. He pre­viously served as vice president and chief operating officer and has more than 30 years of experience
in the field of disability services. Brian lives in Fairport, N.Y.

Christopher Nuechterlein ’76 J.D., U.S. District Court magistrate judge, has been appointed to a second eight-year term beginning in January. He was first appointed in 2000, was retained for another term by the federal court for the Northern District of Indiana. Before his appointment, he served as an assistant commissioner and chief counsel for the California Department of Corrections from 1998 to 2000. From 1989 to 1998, he was an assistant U.S. attorney in the Eastern District of California in a variety of roles.

Kenneth Primavera has been appointed division president of Ameron International Corp’s. Wind-Towers Division. His focus will be on the accelerated sales and marketing efforts relating to Ameron’s growing presence in the wind-tower business. Prior to this appointment, he was group vice president of sales and marketing for the West Coast region and division president of the Protective Linings Division of the Water Transmission Group. He joined Ameron in November 1996 from Chicago Bridge & Iron Co., where he held a number of management positions in the U.S. and overseas.

1974

Kathryn (Boriack) Hill’s first book of poetry, “Rich in Grace: The Bible of the Poor for 21st-Century Christians,” has been published by American Lu­theran Publicity Bureau. Stephen Schapanski J.D. of Fort Collins, Colo., was appointed by Gov. Bill Ritter to serve on the district court bench of the 8th Judicial District. Stephen currently serves as a district court magistrate in the 8th Judicial District. Prior to that, he was a partner at Smith, Rau & Schapanski, where he practiced from 1974 to 1993.

Mark Schulz is a member of the board of directors of YRC Worldwide. He recently retired after 32 years at Ford Motor Co., most recently as executive vice president and president of international operations.

1975

John Fowlkes was appointed judge of Criminal Court, Division VI, in Memphis, Tenn., by Gov. Phil Bredesen. John and his wife, Michelle, and their two sons moved to Memphis in 1978, after John grad­uated from law school at the University of Denver. He worked briefly as a public defender and then, for 10 years, as a state prosecutor. He became a federal prosecutor in 1989.

Mary (Rudasics) Harper J.D. has been awarded the 2007 Honorable Viola J. Talliaferro Award by the Indiana State Bar Association. She was recognized for her work on the Mayor’s Commission Against Domestic Violence, the Porter County Early Inter­vention Planning Team, the Porter County Com­munity Corrections Advisory Board, as well as her service on the Porter County Safe School Commission and the Porter County Juvenile Summit.

Betty (James) Hoppensteadt opened The Genuine Art-icle, a studio workshop gallery and bead shop in Wheaton, Ill. She teaches a variety of classes on all aspects of beadwork and also classes in lamp work bead making, which uses a torch to melt glass rods into sculptural beads. She has been teaching for the last 10 years at the College of DuPage. Gregory Rose is dean and director of The Ohio State University, Marion. He has been with OSU for 25 years. Last June he served as a featured speaker at Marion Technical College’s 35th annual commence­ment. Gregory completed his master’s degree in geography from Michigan State University in 1977, and his doctoral degree in geography from Michigan State University in 1981.

Carleen Stoskopf has been named director of San Diego State University’s Graduate School of Public Health. Prior to this position she served as chair of the department of health services policy and man­agement at the Arnold School of Public Health at the University of South Carolina. She also has been in­volved in more than 20 research grants and contracts, totaling more than $15 million. Carleen received a doctoral degree in health policy and management from The Johns Hopkins University School of Public Health and her master’s degree in environmental health from the University of Minnesota.

Robert Symer ’75 M.Mus. and his wife, Jennifer (Rodgers ’93), live in Valparaiso. Robert has been employed by Portage Township Schools since 1976, where he is the music coordinator for grades six through 12. He also is a past president of the Inter­national Association of Jazz Educators and a member of Indiana Music Educators Association and Indiana Band Masters Association. He is active in performing jazz and is a member of the faculty at Jamey Aebersold Summer Jazz Clinic at the University of Louisville. He plays trumpet and piano.

Miriam (Sammetinger) Wallinger and husband Tom Bredesen honeymooned in Belize, then returned to China for a second summer stint teaching English to rural middle school English teachers. Together they have six grown children and reside on a 10-acre hobby farm in the Northwoods of Wisconsin. Miriam is a substitute teacher in the local schools, and Tom is a retired school principal/superintendent. They are always looking for mission/servant events that require travel.

1976

Gene Bartow (honorary) is president of Hoops LP, the company that operates the Memphis Grizzlies and their arena, the FedExForum. Gene was chosen NCAA coach of the year in 1973. He also coached at Central Missouri and at Valpo, from 1964 to 1970. He was inducted into Valpo’s Athletics Hall of Fame in 1998.

Susan (Tuck) Bellile of Oak Park, Ill., Susan DeWald (Fort Wayne, Ind.), Deb (Plouse) Fulton (Middletown, Pa.), Nan (Abernathy) Moss (Watertown, Wis.), and Ruth (Stark) Paramenter (Oklahoma City, Okla.) spent a long weekend in July having fun and catching up. Their travel to Branson, Mo., was reminiscent of the circuitous routes that brought them to Scheele Hall in 1973.

Dave Bohl, wife Susan and their three sons traveled to Mykonos, Greece, where they enjoyed a great vacation at a Pension Marina, which is owned and operated by fellow classmate George Athimiritis ’76 (marina@mykonos-web.com). Dave is national managing partner for Deloitte & Touche Investment Advisors. He lives in Whitefish Bay, Wis.
Anthony Burgess-Cassler has been named senior scientist at the QuantRx Corporate Research Center in Portland, Ore.

Stephen Harms, Richmond, Va., serves as the new deputy chief of staff for Gov. Timothy M. Kaine. Stephen has been the administration’s deputy secretary of health and human resources. He worked for two decades in the General Assembly as an analyst for the Joint Legislative Audit and Review Commission and the Senate Finance Committee.

Greg Karas and his wife, Elizabeth (Foelber ’79), reside in Valparaiso and have two children: Nick, 26, and Natalie, 23. Greg earned his master’s degree in education from Indiana University and has been an educator for 31 years. He currently teaches fourth grade at Parkview Elementary School.

Sharon (Favorite) Lemler is president of the board of directors of the Cathedral Counseling Center in Chicago.

Joseph Pomeroy J.D. has been named vice president and general counsel for Brunswick Marine in EMEA and Brunswick Asia/Pacific Group. He oversees legal affairs for Brunswick’s marine operations in Europe and Asia/Pacific. He will be located in Belgium and will operate out of Brunswick Marine in EMEA offices in Verviers.

Duane Rabe of Hawthorn Wood, Ill., retired from Motorola in 2006 and founded a private consulting firm, Duane Rabe & Associates. Duane served Motorola for 30 years and helped design and develop leading cellular phone models. He was chief architect for the world’s first commercial digital cellular phones, and holds 25 patents with several more pending. Motorola named him a Dan Noble Fellow, its highest honor for technical impact, and presented him the Master Innovator award. Last October the VU Alumni Association awarded Duane the Alumni Achievement Award for extraordinary success in his profession.

Joyce (Eshelman) Walker M.A.L.S. and husband Dave ’76 M.A.L.S. live in Hebron, Ind., and have two daughters. Joyce has been employed by Porter Township School Corporation for 35 years, and she has served as organist for Hebron United Methodist Church for 35 years.

Anthony Zappia J.D. of South Bend, Ind., was elected chair of the Indiana Supreme Court Disci­plinary Commission. He is in his second term on the commission, having been appointed in 2001 and re-appointed to a second five-year term, expiring in 2011. He is the senior member of the four-person law firm of Zappia Zappia & Stipp. His principal areas of practice are personal injury, criminal defense, domestic relations and civil litigation.

Sherry Fraser serves as dean of the college, Con­cordia College, New York. The college has received a $2 million, five-year award from the U.S. Department of Education to underwrite an accelerated 15-month Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program.

Marilyn (Younghouse) Haas is a nurse practitioner at Mountain Radiation Oncology in Asheville, N.C. She received the Oncology Nursing Society Mary Nowotny Excellence in Cancer Nursing Educational Award. Marilyn earned her M.S. in nursing from Clemson University and her doctorate in nursing from the University of South Carolina. She is a mem­ber of the American Society for Therapeutic Radiolo­gy and Oncology, and the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing. She also is a member of the board at large of the Caring Ambassador’s Program and the Nurse Practitioner council of the North Carolina Nurses Association.

John and Sandra (Hart) Hallman’s son, Jason, graduated from Valpo in 2006 with a B.S. in mech­anical engineering. Son Adam also graduated from Valpo in May 2007 with a B.S. degree in business administration. Their daughter, Briana, who is en­rolled at Valpo, is studying in Reutingen, Germany, and plans to graduate in 2009.

Krista (Jutzi) Kotur and husband Don ’78 reside in St. Louis. Krista is a distribution planner with AmerenUE. She has been with the company for 30 years. Don is an environmental engineer for the Air Pollution Control Program of the Missouri Depart­ment of Natural Resources. In May, he became the proud owner of a new Harley-Davidson Screamin’ Eagle Softail Springer. Their daughter, Kelsey, attends the University of Missouri-Columbia. Son Kevin, a high school sophomore, completed his third summer course at Truman State University’s Joseph Baldwin Academy for Eminent Young Scholars.

Bruce Rennecker was named vice president of prod­uct management and marketing by Digital Check Corp. He will lead development of new products and services at Digital Check and lead business develop­ment activities. Prior to joining Digital Check, Bruce was vice president of sales and marketing for Summit Industries Inc., a privately owned x-ray manufacturer.

Barbara (Tonkovich) Zeile of Detroit has been ap­pointed director of special operations for the Charter School Center of Central Michigan University.
