1978
Linda (Ivett) Allen of Kennesaw, Ga., has had a 28-year career at Lockheed Martin in a number of positions, including leadership of international inspection teams and aircraft fleet support teams, as well as management of major aeronautical proposal projects. She currently directs modification and sustainment activities for the C-130 fleet. She has been a member of the Valpo Guild since 1979 and serves on Valpo’s College of Engineering National Council. Linda received the VU Alumni Association’s Alumni Achievement Award in October.
David Clark ’90 J.D. has joined the law offices of Peter B. Canalia in Lansing, Ill. David is licensed to practice law in Illinois and Indiana.
Al Seib has been a Los Angeles Times staff photographer since 1984. His photos have won numerous awards from national and international photographers associations. He also has worked for the Chicago Sun Times where, in 1984, his photos earned him the Illinois Press Photographer Association’s Photographer-of–the-year award.
Paul Strasen is an attorney who has held various leadership roles in the restaurant industry. He delivered the commencement address at Valpo in December. Paul has served as a member of Valparaiso’s Board of Directors since 2004 and also is a former member of the Christ College National Council. He resides in Littleton, Colo.
1979
Robert Carlson M.D. has joined the Medical Advisory Board of New Health Group. Since 1994 he has presided over a minimally invasive cardiac and thoracic surgical practice in Sarasota, Fla. He also has participated in extensive cardiovascular research at Harvard University. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and is board certified in general surgery, thoracic surgery, and through the American Academy of Anti-aging medicine. Robert is a two-time Ironman and has completed more than 15 marathons.
Laura (Jungkuntz) Karlin and husband Tom reside in Lakewood, Wash. They are members of the Tacoma Catholic Worker live-in volunteer staff. Mary (Burce) Warlick has been named Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for Russia of the National Security Council, by President George W. Bush. She previously served as director of the Office of Russian Affairs at the Department of State. She is a career senior Foreign Service officer. (See “Alumni Sketch” on Page 11.)

Vanita Banks J.D. is the president of the National Bar Association. She is an attorney in the corporate litigation group of Allstate Insurance Co.
Paul Steven Henry was appointed to the position of vice president, product development, of MassMutual Retirement Services. He joined MassMutual from John Hancock, where he held key roles on the retirement services management teams at Scudder, Transamerica and Charles Schwab. He holds a certificate in business strategy from the London School of Economics and he is a member of the Society of Professional Asset Managers and Recordkeepers.
Cindy (Hubartt) Mueller ’83 M.Ed. and husband Ken ’79 reside in Valparaiso. Cindy is the director and a teacher at Tender Loving Care Preschool at Trinity Lutheran Church. She is a member of the National Association for the Education of Young Children, National Association of Childcare Providers and Indiana Association for the Education of Young children. Cindy and Ken have a son, Glen.
Anne Walther has relocated to Oklahoma City, where she is employed by the University of Oklahoma as an air traffic control instructor at the Mike Monroney Aeronautical Center.

Joyce (Nowak) Azzaline lives in Orland Park, Ill. She is an assistant professor of nursing at Trinity Christian College in Palos Heights, Ill. She earned her M.S.N. from St. Xavier and her M.S. degree from California College of Health Sciences. She is pursuing her doctorate in health sciences at Nova Southeastern University.
Paul Grime has accepted a call to serve as dean of chapel and associate professor at Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne, Ind., which began in the fall of 2007. During the past 11 years, he has served as executive director for the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod Commission on Worship. In that position he was project director for the new LCMS hymnal, Lutheran Service Book, which was published in 2006. Paul and his wife, Debra, have two sons, Matthew and Nathan.
Susan (Metzger) Miles was promoted to officer, Kids Caring & Sharing program with the Riley Children’s Foundation. She is working to develop philanthropic partnerships with all Indiana schools in support of Riley Hospital for Children. Susan has a daughter who attends Purdue and a daughter at Xavier. (She is hoping to persuade her daughter at Cathedral High School in Indianapolis to select Valpo.)

Steven Brown ’86 J.D. has been promoted to senior vice president of residential services for LandAmerica Financial Group Inc. He oversees the company’s residential services operations in Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois. He is based in Chicago.
Andy Herbach, a Milwaukee attorney and professional travel writer, has written 10 travel guidebooks that have been published by Open Road/Simon & Schuster. His latest book, “Open Road’s Best of Paris,” provides concise descriptions and offers choices and itineraries for one-day, weekend, one-week and two-week trips to Paris and environs.
Valerie Hess M.M. has written her second book, “Spiritual Disciplines: A Year of Readings.” The book introduces readers to the core disciplines of the Christian faith. Eric Kolodziej is vice president of quality and regulatory compliance, North America, at Roche Diagnostics. For five years prior to this position, he served as vice president of quality at Perrigo Consumer Healthcare in Allegan, Mich. He lives with his wife, Mary, and son Kyle, 16, in Carmel, Ind.
Karen (Erks) Spillers was elected a trustee of the Village of Wilmette (Ill.). She also was recognized by the New Trier Township Republican Organization as 2007 Volunteer of the Year. Karen and her husband, Curtis, have been married for 21 years and have two children.
Mary Squyres J.D. of Chicago has been elected a shareholder in the law firm of Brinks Hofer Gilson & Lione. She is chair of the firm’s International Trademark Group, manages a staff of eight, and more than 20,000 active trademark files.

Jennifer (Scott) Goulet resides in Canton, Mich. She is the director of development of ArtServe Michigan, an arts advocacy and services organization. Prior to this position she was executive director of the Chelsea Center for the Arts.
Peter Koehn of Hugo, Minn., was named vice president, corporate controller at Imation. He has more than 20 years of business experience in manufacturing, retail, distribution and high-tech industries. He joined Imation in 2000 as division controller for the company’s data storage and information management segment.
Frank Lattal J.D., executive vice president and general counsel of Partner Reinsurance Co. of the U.S. of Greenwich, Conn., has been elected chairman of ARIAS U.S., the AIDA Reinsurance and Insurance Arbitration Society.
Alison Lemke of Newton, Iowa, is a speech pathologist. She is a member of the faculty of the University of Northern Iowa Communications Sciences and Disorders Department as a clinical supervisor, and is the coordinator of speech pathology services at Marshalltown Medical and Surgical Center. Alison has been elected to a three-year term on the board of directors of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association and serves as vice president of planning and administration. She and her husband, John, have two children, Matthew, 14, and Nicholas, 10.
Mark Olson, wife Pamela and their two sons, Matthew, 14, and Mark Jr., 11, reside in Westminster, Colo. Mark moved from working for the State Division of Parole and Community Corrections to the position of forensic program manager with Aurora Mental Health Center in Aurora, Colo. He is responsible for developing new programs within local jails and state prisons for the successful transition of offenders with mental illness back into the community. Mark continues as an elder at Risen Savior Lutheran Church in Broomfield, Colo., and his annual role as DJ for their Oktoberfest.

Mark Guilfoil is an executive manager with the U.S. Postal Service, working in supply management. He previously held acquisition positions with the U.S. Department of Energy and the Department of the Navy, Naval Sea Systems Command, both in Washington, D.C. Mark sends greetings to all classmates and especially his economics friends and Cambridge Semester C31 participants. Mark obtained his J.D. degree from the University of Missouri-Columbia and studied at the University of London, Faculty of Laws, in London, England. He is a member of the Missouri and Washington, D.C., bars. He and his wife, Michelle, have two sons, Logan and Seth.
Leah Hafemeister of Toledo, Ohio, works as a vocational specialist. She has worked at Lucas County Board of Mental Retardation/Developmental Disabilities for almost 20 years. Her daughter, Louise, is now in third grade.
Howell and Sue (Noyes) Hair have returned to the United States after 16 years of living in Europe. Along with their three children, they are now living in suburban Chicago and enjoying the chance to reconnect with Valpo friends. How is now working for KPMG in information technology advisory services, and Sue is considering a return to teaching after homeschooling their youngest child at the end of their Eurpoean stay.
Devin Haman and his business partner are co-founders and owners of six upscale tanning salons with top-of-the-line tanning equipment throughout California. They also are stars in their own reality TV show, “Sunset Tan,” which airs on “E.

Kay (Kiehlbauch) Nannet and Barbra (Boyd) Crews are co-chairs for the biennial conference of the Evangelical and Ecumenical Women’s Caucus’ that will be held in Indianapolis, June 27-29, 2008. The title of the conference is “A Place at the Table,” and will include speakers Rev. Phil Gulley, Rev. Elder Nancy Wilson, and singer/songwriter Carrie Newcomer, as well as other leaders in Christianity and feminism. Valpo alumni are welcome to attend. Lanny and Barbara (Erickson ’84) Potts live in Portage, Mich. Lanny serves as the associate provost for academic affairs and student support at Kalamazoo College. He recently was promoted to full professor within the Theatre Department at Kalamazoo.
Dave Surma is the chair of the Department of Computer and Information Sciences at Indiana University in South Bend, Ind. He earned a master’s degree in electrical engineering in 1989 from the University of Arizona and a Ph.D. degree in computer science and engineering from the University of Notre Dame in 1998. Wife, Maria (Anderson ’88), received her M.S.Ed. degree from Purdue University in 1996 and currently teaches at Purdue University North Central. She also is a science specialist at St. John’s Lutheran School in LaPorte, Ind. The couple has two children, Zoe and Amelia. They look forward to hearing from old friends at dsurma@iusb.edu.

Kim (Yelton) Goetsch and husband Jeff ’85 reside in Fort Collins, Colo. They have four children: Jeremy, 15, Nathan, 13, Kayla, 10, and Adam, who is a first-year student at Valpo. The Goetsch family owns a subcontracting construction company.
Chuck Grouzard resides in Northbrook, Ill., with wife Margaret and daughters Maddie, 9, and Grace, 7. Chuck has served GES Exposition Services for 20 years and is currently the vice president of national sales.
Joseph Kreoll ’89 J.D. has joined the law offices of Richard Malagiere PC, in Hackensack, N.J. He practices in the areas of civil rights and construction litigation in the New Jersey and New York courts.

Cynthia (Paetz) Cummons and husband Scott reside in St. Louisville, Ohio. Cindy teaches part time in the human services program at Central Ohio Technical College. Scott is employed at Rolls-Royce in Mount Vernon, Ohio. Their daughter, Lauren, is in first grade, and son Clayton is in kindergarten.
Rick and Peggy (Fricke ’89) Duellman have four children: Kate, 10, Elizabeth, 8, Suzanne, 3, and Hilary, 1. The family resides in Fountain City, Wis.

Jeff Harris J.D. and wife Nadine live in Scottsburg, Ind. Jeff is the executive director of the Scott County Heritage Center and Museum in Scottsburg. He also is a member and past president of the board of the Association of Indiana Museums.

Paul Madrid II retired from the U.S. Army on Nov. 1, 2007, after serving 20 years active duty.
Karen (Dick) Rideout, husband Dane and children, Zach, 17, and Lauren, 14, have returned to the United States after living in Stuttgart, Germany, for four years. They now live in Fayetteville, N.C., where Dane will be the G1 for the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg. Karen teaches elementary music, volunteers, and is training for the 2007 Marine Corps Marathon.
Ann (Zobel) Simonet and husband Stephane live in Tours, France. She teaches English at the University of Poitiers. When she passed the National Competitive Teaching Exam to become a civil servant, she scored No. 1 nationwide.

Paula Darr is president of Platinum Event Partners, a boutique meeting and incentive company, which also offers group luxury travel planning services. She studied abroad in the Cambridge program in spring 1987—the experience that initiated her love for travel. She currently lives in downtown Chicago.
Paula (Stula) Davis, husband Rick and their two children, Veronica, 11, and Jack, 7, reside in Schererville, Ind. Paula is a volunteer for the Humane Society Calumet Area in Munster, Ind.
Kara (Mielke) Forsythe lives in Avon, Ind., with her two daughters, Kimberly, 14, and Stephanie, 10. She works for Clarian Health Partners as a computer systems analyst. Kara and her daughters attend Our Shepherd Lutheran Church on the west side of Indianapolis, along with a number of other Valpo alumni and their families. Janet Hallman has been appointed chief of the Resource Management Center for the U.S. Railroad Retirement Board. This center administers the $9.4 billion-a-year benefit programs provided under the Federal Railroad Retirement and Unemployment Insurance Acts covering the nation’s railroad workforce and their families. Prior to this appointment, she was executive assistant to the director of programs. She has been an RRB employee since 1988.
Keith Kizer is the executive director of the Nevada Athletic Commission. He recently regulated the Oscar De la Hoya—Floyd Mayweather Jr. card of May 5, 2007; the Chuck Liddell—Rampage Jackson UFC card of May 26, 2007. He and his wife, Elizabeth, who is a business reporter for the Las Vegas Sun, reside in Henderson, Nev. Pam Ganswindt has been selected as the recipient of her local Walmart/Sam’s Club Teacher of the Year award for 2007. Pam has been teaching at Elm Grove Lutheran School in Elm Grove, Wis., for the past 18 years.
Candy (Conrad) Kilpinen of Valparaiso serves as chair of the Board of Directors of the Valparaiso University Guild. Her term ends in December 2008.
Bradley Soos J.D. of Florence, Ariz., was appointed as a full-time Superior Court judge, pro tempore, for Pinal County. Prior to his appointment, he was a prosecutor for the Pinal County attorney’s office from 1989 to 2006. He prosecuted the most serious and dangerous offenders in Pinal County. He also spent one year in private civil practice. He and his wife Amy have been married for 14 years and have a son who is 2.

Heather (Runnells) Anders, husband Scott and their children, Erin and Liam, reside in Cedarburg, Wis. Heather works as a structural engineer at HNTB Corp. in Milwaukee, and Scott is the technical director at Kubin-Nicholson, also in Milwaukee.
Thomas Arado and his wife, Therese, reside in DeKalb, Ill. He works for the state’s attorneys appellate prosecutor.
Patty (Weyburn) Conliss, husband Jim and their son, Cooper, reside in Coppell, Texas. Patty is an audit manager for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, Office of Inspector General.
Michael Devault resides in Jacksonville, Fla., where he is vice president of global distribution and logistics for Timex Group B.V. He is responsible for global distribution, customer service, inventory control and repair and service.
Jeff Johnston has accepted a call to Morton Community United Church of Christ in Morton, Ill. Jeff joined the church in celebrating their 175th anniversary in September.
Ingrid (Wagner) Nagy and her husband, Cade, have lived in Denver since 1996. They own and operate Catering by Design, a large catering company in Colorado. They have two children: a son, Trae, 7, and a daughter, Breck, 4.
Cherie (Wibben) Rankin of Emden, Ill., has finished her Ph.D. in English studies at Illinois State University. She has taken a tenure-track position in the Humanities and the Fine Arts Division at Heartland Community College, Normal, Ill.
Peter Richert J.D. entered the seminary in 2002. He received a Master of Divinity degree from Concordia Theological Seminary in Fort Wayne, Ind., and was ordained and installed as the pastor of the Lutheran Church of Our Savior in Mount Pocono, Pa., in July 2007.
David Wierman of Atlanta, Ga., is managing director in the financial sponsors group at Baird. He has been named to Investment Dealers’ Digest annual 40 Under 40 list, which recognizes those who are “among the brightest, hardest-working people in the financial arena” under the age of 40, as determined by the publication. David is a co-founder of Baird’s U.S. financial sponsor group.

Timothy Good’s second book, “The Lincoln-Douglas Debates and the Making of a President,” has been published by McFarland Press.
Jim Lancaster is the group product director for DePuy Orthopaedics Inc. He has worked for the company for 15 years. Jim earned his master’s degree in mechanical engineering at the University of Leeds in the United Kingdom. He and his wife have three children.
Mikko Lipasti of Middleton, Wis., worked for IBM, Intel and Sun Microsystems. He currently is an associate professor of electrical and computer engineering at the University of Wisconsin. His groundbreaking research in the area of dependent data value prediction was recognized with the 2002 Eta Kappa Nu Outstanding Young Electrical and Computer Engineer Award. Last October, Mikko also was presented with the VU Alumni Association’s Outstanding Young Alumnus Award, which recognizes alumni under the age of 40 who have distinguished themselves.
Anya Moore earned her second master’s degree from Illinois Institute of Technology and achieved national teaching certification in high school mathematics. She has been teaching in Chicago for 11 years.
Christy (Bock) Pierce and husband John reside in Sussex, Wis. Christy is a senior public relations specialist at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin.
Joanne Traeger works in television and radio, hosting her own radio show in Sydney, Australia.
Jenny Weber of Bloomington, Minn., taught kindergarten for several years for the Edina School District. She also was a first-grade teacher at The Blake School in Hopkins. She now works as the recreation manager for Life Care Retirement Services. Jenny enjoys exploring the Twin Cities, cheering for the Minnesota Wild, spending time with family and traveling.

Erin Drawz has been a licensed professional counselor for the last nine years and a therapist in a residential treatment center for adolescents for 12 years. She currently works for Homme Youth and Family Programs, which is part of Lutheran Social Services. She also is a Tastefully Simple consultant.
Michelle (Buss) Johnson and her son, Alex, 3, attended Homecoming and had a great time. Michelle urges classmates to attend the 20th reunion for the Class of ’92. Christopher Jones lives in Chicago and Miller Beach, Ind., with his wife, Megan. He recently sold his bar and grill in the Lincoln Park neighborhood of Chicago and took time off to travel in Asia, South America and the international study program in Cambridge, England. Christopher is involved with the Rock for Kids charity and the Les Turner ALS Foundation.
Andrea (Lapointe) Krause spent 12 days on a mission trip in Zimbabwe in September. It was her fourth mission trip in two years. She traveled with members of Eagle Projects International, an organization based out of Dover, Mass. For five days the group provides free medical clinics in different rural settings. Derek Kritzer is a member of the DeWitt Ross & Stevens Law Firm in Madison, Wis. His practice is focused primarily on mergers and acquisitions, contract negotiations, real estate, securities and intellectual property law.
Paul Manz D.S.M. has served as national councilor of the American Guild of Organists and is listed as one of the “101 Most Notable Organists of the 20th Century.” His biography, “The Journey Was Chosen: The Life and Work of Paul Manz,” was recently released by MorningStar Music Publishers.
Robert Samuelsen J.D. is a captain in the U.S. Army JAG Corps. He received the Bronze Star Medal in Iraq for meritorious service while deployed from July 2006 to June 2007. He is stationed in Hawaii where he and his wife, Julia, are raising their two children

Christie (Freiheit) Alley and husband Bob have been married since 1995 and live in Elkhart, Ind., with their two children, Brandon, 8, and Kayla, 5. Christie has worked at Monaco Coach Corp. for 14 years and is the manager of Employee Relations and Staffing for the Indiana operations. Bob is co-owner of Cleer Vision Windows.
Peter Dyba of Crown Point, Ind., has been appointed director of imaging services at St. Mary Medical Center.
Suzanne (Hansen) Gerber and husband Doug ’91 live in Libertyville, Ill. Doug teaches English at Vernon Hills High School, and Suzanne stays at home with their children, Jack and Kate.
Kevin Jump is the director of the environmental department at USI Consultants. Prior to this position he was a city engineer for Noblesville, Ind. Kevin also has served as a water and wastewater consultant for the Indiana Association of Cities and Towns. He and his wife, Heidi, have two children. Kevin enjoys training and competing in triathlons.
Stephanie (Hansen) Kray and husband Ryan work as family physicians in Little Falls, Minn. They have three sons, Aidan, Collin and Nolan.
Steven Mapes J.D. was appointed to a judgeship in the San Bernardino County (Calif.) Superior Court. He resides in Redlands and has served as a deputy public defender for the San Bernardino County Public Defender’s Office since 1998. Prior to that position, he was an attorney for the San Bernardino Conflict Panel and an associate for the Professional Lawyers Group.
Christopher Yugo J.D. of Highland, Ind., has joined First National Bank as vice president and senior trust officer. He will oversee First National Bank’s Trust Department, which serves Northwest Indiana and southern Cook County and Will County in Illinois.
