President Harre to Mark 20 Years at Valpo
When Valparaiso University President Alan F. Harre retires on June 30, 2008, he will be the third longest serving chief executive in Valpo’s history.
Harre became president on July 1, 1988, and celebrates his 20th anniversary this year. It is a length of service surpassed only by Henry Baker Brown, president from 1873 to 1917, and Otto Paul Kretzmann, 1940 to 1968.
Under Harre’s leadership, the university enhanced academics and constructed a number of new facilities including the VU Center for the Arts, Christopher Center for Library and Information Resources, and the union. Valpo’s endowment has grown from $37 million to nearly $193 million.
Harre oversaw three major fundraising campaigns. “Lighting the Way” raised $37.5 million; “Three Goals, One Promise” netted $121 million; and the current “Our Valpo, Our Time, 150th Anniversary Initiative” has reached 70 percent of its goal of $200 million. Click here to learn more.
The accomplishments of the Harre administration were featured in the Summer 2007 VALPO magazine, which is online at valpo.edu/valpomag/pastissues. To receive a copy of the magazine, send an e-mail to: valpo.magazine@valpo.edu.
