Symposium Promotes Peaceful World
For more than half a decade, Valparaiso University’s Peace and Justice Symposium has been uniting individuals who wish to create a more just and peaceful world.
The theme of the sixth annual symposium last fall was “Threads of Reconciliation: Peacemaking in the 21st Century.” Speakers included several experts in the area of peacemaking and reconciliation:
- Gerard F. Powers, director of policy studies at the Joan B. Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies at the University of Notre Dame.
- Chris Rice, co-director of Duke University’s Center for Reconciliation.
- Shane Claiborne, a prominent activist who serves on the board of directors for the Christian Community Development Association and is a founding member of The Simple Way, a community of faith in inner-city Philadelphia.
The symposium also featured a discussion on “Threads of Reconciliation: Linking Home, School, Community and Faith” by a panel that included Nelly Van Doorn-Harder, Patheja professor of world religions and ethics at Valpo, and Andre Gammage ’85, ’88 J.D., a partner at a South Bend, Ind., law firm.
