While studying at Valpo, I spent a semester abroad in Paris, and I fell in love with France. After graduation, I decided to return and took a position working as an English assistant in a high school in St-Dié-des-Vosges. Here I formed lifelong friendships and came to appreciate even more the experience and opportunity my semester abroad offered.

Upon returning to the U.S., I began applying to graduate programs in comparative literature and was accepted to the UW-Madison program around the same time that I was offered a writing position with shopbop.com. This position allowed me to stretch my creative mind as well as brought me into uncharted territory, writing marketing copy. It was a complete turnaround from what I had done in the past, but it also demanded the keen editorial eye and attention to detail I had learned working as editor of The Torch.

After a summer working with shopbop, I decided to postpone my graduate degree, a painstaking decision that was ultimately just right. The company has grown in leaps and bounds, having been purchased by Amazon.com in February of 2006. Each day brings a new project and challenge, and each day demands fresh ideas.

This was an unexpected job for me, but it incorporates everything I wanted to do with my editorial experience. Valpo taught me to look at things with a critical eye and never stop challenging myself, and I use this in everything that I do.
