Valparaiso University: Presidents

Aaron Gurney, 1869-1871

The last president of the Valparaiso Male and Female College was the Rev. Aaron Gurney, a local clergyman, lawyer and editor. Gurney attempted to raise money and increase student numbers, but enrollment declined until only two programs—commerce and music—could be offered. In 1871, the board of trustees closed the College and designated a committee to locate other groups who would use the property for educational purposes.
