IDI FAQ

The Intercultural Development Inventory is a instrument that measures intercultural competence, defined here as the capacity to shift perspective and behavior based on commonalities and differences by experiencing cultures and individuals with greater levels of complexity.

The IDI is a comprehensive tool that incorporates multiple components beyond an online assessment, including reflective, interpretation, and suggestions on how a person can deepen their intercultural competence. The 50 assessment items are culture-general in nature; the IDI does not refer to the culture of any specific community, ethnicity, group, etc. The IDI is used across a range of industries to engage individuals, groups, and organizations in understanding their approach to cultural differences. Widely adopted in higher education, the IDI complements a variety of programs including faculty and staff development; student assessment and development; and study abroad amongh other programming.

Individual faculty and staff members of the Valpo campus community are invited to take the IDI. If you participate in this professional development opportunity, you will learn more about intercultural competence. You may then decide to explore the potential to integrate the IDI within your classroom, unit, or other specific group of colleagues or students. If you are a faculty or staff member interested in taking the IDI, please contact Carol Goss or Stacy Hoult or complete the IDI Interest Form.

  • Complete a 50-item, online assessment (15-20 min.)
  • Schedule a debrief meeting, a required component of the IDI assessment.
  • Shortly before the debrief meeting, receive your individual results and your IDI Plan.
  • Participate in a confidential, one-on-one debrief meeting during which you will interpret your results.
  • If desired, begin your individualized plan as you develop your intercultural competence. LINC offers the IDI Planners Group, a monthly accountability group for faculty and staff who wish to begin working on their IDI Plan.

The IDI assessment tool is a cross-culturally valid and reliable assessment of intercultural competence used in every sector across a wide range of demographics. Learn more about development and validity testing of the IDI. The extensive psychometric validation protocols used in developing the IDI are described in greater detail in a variety of publications and independent reviews.

If you are a faculty or staff member, you will first take the IDI yourself. Then, you will meet with Carol Goss or Stacy Hoult to discuss the objectives and scope of your project for using the IDI and review the implementation process.

Carol Goss and Stacy Hoult, both of whom are licensed by IDI, LLC, are currently the two individuals who can administer the IDI assessment at Valpo. Both have completed the IDI Qualifying Seminar training; they also participate in ongoing training provided by IDI, LLC. Each are licensed by the IDI, LLC as a “Qualified Administrator,” or “QA.” In this role, they serve as a neutral guide in helping you interpret your own IDI results, whether in an individual or group debrief session. When you take the IDI at Valpo, you may choose to work with either Carol Goss or Stacy Hoult.
