Sloan painted a salon-style landscape in 1870, when the Catskill Mountain House was at the peak of its popularity, with accommodations for 400 guests and as many servants. It was a ritual at the Mountain House to wake the guests shortly before five to invite them out on the piazza to watch the sun rise over the Hudson.
