The Chapel of the Resurrection will join with people around the world in celebrating the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation in October of 2017.
Reformation Sunday is Oct. 29 with worship at 10 a.m., University Pastor James A. Wetzstein presiding. Guest preacher is Rev. Abdi Mulat, Ethiopian Evangelical Church Mekane Yesus. He is the first of the four Wangerin Preaching Series guest preachers for 2017-18. Special music will be presented by the Kantorei, Resurrection Ringers handbell choir, and the Chamber Concert Band. A new set of red vestments will be dedicated at the start of the service.
At 3 p.m. on Oct. 29, the Chapel will host a Reformation Hymn Festival, “The Truth Will Make You Free.” Organists are Sunghee Kim and William Ickstadt. Choirs for the hymn sing are the Kantorei and the Adult Choir of Immanuel Lutheran Church of Valparaiso.
Notably, the Valparaiso University Chorale which will be performing in Wittenberg, Germany, at the 500th anniversary commemoration of the Reformation, will help lead the music for the Chapel on Sunday, Oct. 22nd, during the 10 a.m. service of Holy Communion. The Chorale will sing several selections of special music to be performed as part of their tour to Germany, including a hymn concertato based on Luther’s “A Mighty Fortress is Our God.” The Chorale has been honored to be the only international choir to be invited to perform in the Castle Church (Wittenberg) on the day of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation.
