This 200-page prayer book features devotional resources for individuals and group settings. The book was written by current and former members of the Valparaiso University community. It was published by Valparaiso University in cooperation with the University Guild and released in the fall of 2001.
The book is edited by Gail Eifrig, professor emerita of English, and Frederick Niedner, professor of theology. It is organized by seasons of the church year, with each section offering devotional thoughts, prayers for specific occasions, and other resources.
Included in the book are excerpts from 28 sermons and homilies delivered in the Chapel of the Resurrection on campus and other memorable messages such as a 1950 Christmas message by former Valparaiso University President O.P. Kretzmann. There also are 20 pages of color photographs that were taken on campus.
Valparaiso University President Alan Harre described the purpose of the book in its preface, where he wrote, “It is the hope of everyone who was involved in producing this resource that the content of these pages will inspire devotional reflection, promote the practice of praying regularly, edify the faith, and contribute to the sense of well-being for all who use this book.”
Title for the book comes from the lyrics to the hymn “O God, Our Help in Ages Past,” which is sung at most formal university celebrations such as Opening Convocation and Baccalaureate.
Publication of the book was funded by a gift from the University Guild. Income from sale of the book will be used for future reprints.
Copies of this prayer book are still available and can be purchased for $10 each. Please contact Church Relations by email at firstname.lastname@example.org or phone 219.464.5417 to place your order.
